Description
DANIEL HODGKINS, OF NEWBRYPORT, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters .Patent No. 88,167, dated Marchr 23, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom' it may concern.'
Beit known that I, DANIEL HODGKINS, ofNewbury port, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Machines for Cleaning or Scouring and Sharpening Knives, Forks, and other articles; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, due reference being had, to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a handy and effective means of cleanin g audsharpening knives, forks, and similar articles ofhousehold-use.4 To these ends,
Its nature consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts to accomplish these purposes, as 'herein' described.
Figure 1 shows a front view of my invention.
Figure 2, a section taken through the line a b.`
Figures 3 and 4, parts hereinafter described.
A-is the base, with a clamp, or jaw, B, to hold the lower rubbers C C', one side ofthe jaw being movable, and held by the screw D.
E is a standard, supporting the pivot for the arms of the boxes F F', andA alsohaving an extension op posite each box, for the support of one end of the splings G.
F F are the boxes, to hold the vscouring-material,-
and are pivoted by their arms at H, and having a jaw, or arrangement to hold the rubbers one side of the jaw being fast to the box, land the other pivoted, as
shown, and having an extension upward, on which the spring G operates, and both holds the rubbers in the jaws, and presses them against the lower rubbers O C', or the article being scoured between them.
. The rubbers i i', C C', are made of leather, or other suitable material, the upper ones, i t', having grooves on their fac`es,'asA shown in fig. 4, corresponding to the apertures iu the bottom ofthe boxes, so that, when put together, they form channels for the passage of the scouring-material to pass down from the box to the scouring-surfaces.
One pair of rubbers is grooved, 'i' O', for the purpose of scouring the sides of fork-tines, and similar articles.
At J is a holder, for the plates o o, making a knife Sharpener, fastened to the base, A, by a swivel-joint-,so as to be free to turn around, and with a screw, N, to hold the plates in place.
The plates o o are made-of steel, hardened, their edges being formed hollowing, as shown at p, fig. 4, and are adjustable by the screw N, to bring'any part of their edges to work, and to remove for regrindin'g; and the swivel of the holder allows them to find their own bearing on the knife, and work to the best advantage.
In operation, the scouring-material is put into the boxes F Ff, and the knife, or article to be scoured, is passed forward and back between the rubbers until iinished, the channels leading down the requisitequantity of dust, or scouring-material, and then the edge of the knife is passed a few times through the crotch of the Sharpener, and it is sharpened.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Holding the channelled rubbers by a jaw, pivoted to the box, holding the scouring-material substantially as set forth.
2. So constructing the box F and its jaw, and hanging them to the standard E, that the spring G shall both hold the jaw, and press the box and rubbers down, substantially as above described.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two witnesses.
-. DANIEL HODGKINS.
Witnesses:
H. G. JonNsoN, Woos'rnn SMITH.
