.TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I,JOHN LANGHAM, Jr., of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in '.lools for Cutting or Slitting Thin Boards; and I do hereby declare thatvthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled inthe art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisv specification, in which- Y Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved device, andl Figure 2 represents a plan view of the same. v
Similar letters ofreference indicate'likc parts. i
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient tool for expeditiously cutting thin boards, such as are used for the backsof picture-frames. t
"lt consists of a cutter or'knife, secured verticallyto a hinged holder, which is suspended on a sliding stock arranged.l in ways, resting at each end upon suitable supports,'which may be secured to a bench, so as to maintain theV said ways suiiciently above the bench to admit the board to be cut'to be passed under the same in front ofthe cutter, whichv being pushed forward by the operator, will sever the board. A spring is connected to the stock of the cutter to retract it. v v l A represents ways, secured at each end to the cross-piece B. A sliding cutterstock, C, is arranged to slide back and forthion the seid ways, and provided with a handle, D, and a bracket, E, to which the tool-holder F is hinged. l Y
G represents the tool, which is secured to the holder by any suitable means.
H represents a retracting-spring, which is secured to the tool-stock, and 'to tliefront crosspiece B.
The implement thus constructed may be secured to a bench by the spurs I, or by any other suitable means, and the thin material to be cut may be passed under it, with one edge gauged against the bach piece B, when, by shoving lthe tool forward, the stuff will be cut o` square to the edge, in any desired lengths, and in a much more expeditious manner than by the common method of sawing, or by cutting against-'a rule, by a knife in the hand. k Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the sliding stock C, provided with a cutter, with the ways A and supporting-pieces B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
