JHN PHILLIPS, :TBM- OF CHIGAGrfL: ILLINIS.
Letters Patent No..63,0v89, dated llfareh 19, 1867. i
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD-TURNING LATHES.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOH PHILLIPS, Jr., of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Machine for Turning Wood; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My said invention consists in a novel device to be arranged upon the stick or piece of wood to be turned, which passes through a suitable bearing therein for that purpose, so as to slide or move Vlongitudinally upon said stick as desired, being supported upon a suitable guide on' the frame of the lathe-for that purpose; said device beingprovided with a laterally adjusted knife, or series of knives, of the desired configuration, to cut or form the members required upon the article to bc frmed, all as hereinafter to-be fully set forth and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand how to construct and use my said invention, Iwill proceed to describe the same with Vparticularity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan or -top view ofmy invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevation ofthe same.
Figure 3, a side elevation thereof, showing the knives; and
Figure i.this a longitudinal sectional View of the same.
Similar letters of reference in the several-iigurcs denote the same parts of my invention.
A represents the frame of the machine which supports a cylindrical bearing, B, through which the stick to be turned passes, and also a laterally adjustable tool-carriage, marked C, which is moved as desired by'means of the handle or lever D', 'as shown. The said toolcarriage is supported in suitable' guides upon the frame A, and is constructed with two members, one passing beneath .the cylinder, holding the gauges F, and one passing above the cylinder, holding the knives or cutting-tool E; the configuration of the gauges and tools corresponding with eachother, and being designed to form or out the required style of members upon t'he st ick to b e turned. The said tool and gauge are removable arid adjustable, being heldin the desired position by means of the setscrews e e and f, and may be replaced with other cutters of other configuration, 4so that any style of members may be turned with the machine. It will be observed that one end of the cylinder' is enlarged, which is for the purpose of admitting the shoulder, asin caseof ythe post of'a bedstead, up close to the knife `or tool E. There is also arranged in vsaid enlargement,a cutter, G r, for the purpose of turning the saidvshioulder as desired, which cutter enables the whole to `be turned simultaneously as it comes up'to the adjacent edge of the cutter E, as clearly shown in fig. 3. Said cutter G is adjustable, and is secured by means of a key,.I-I, and setscrew g, 'as shown. It may be observed that 'thc only essential parts of the' cylinder B are two bearings at the end, though I prefer to connect the said bearings by means of the` cylinder, as shown, as forming a steadier and more uniform 'support for the tool upon the wood being turned' When the cylinder is employed, it is obvious that that side thereof upon which the cutters are placed must be, cut away sousto admitthc cutter upon the wood within which is to be turned, as `shownclearlyin hg. 4. The frame A is provided with grooves a, as shown in fig. 2, into which suitable ribsv upon the frame of the lathe project, to form a rest and guide upon which the machine above mentioned may be moved along upon the stick to be turned as desired. When' the machine has been properlyl adjusted, the piece of wood to be-turned, passing through the cylinder B, and being properly centred in the lathe, as the wood is revolved within the cylinder, the operator, taking hold of the handle-D, moves the cutter up against the wood until it is turned down to themequired sizel and form, when the machine is moved along longitudinally upon the stick for the length of the cutting edge of the tool, when the same operation is repeated until the entire length of the stick has Abeen turned as desired, whenthe knife G forms the shoulder,` which enters the enlargement in the cylinder B as required, and the post is completed.
Having described the-construction and operation of my invention, I will specify what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent -1. I claim the cylindricel bearing or holder B, or its equivalent, in combination with the cutters E, arranged and operating substantially as specified.
2.I claim the arrangement of the cutterk G, with the cylindrical bearing B, or its equivalent, voperating as and for the purposes s'etforth.
