To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK W. KLINE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at North Germantown, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in rI`oy Flagstaffs, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to toy flag staffs, contemplating particularly the provision of a simple form of sectional staff adapted to be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost, comprising parts adapted to be readily and conveniently assembled and disassembled for putting up nd taking down the stad.

The invention further contemplates a novel form of staffebase provided with means for staying the same to securely support the staif in an upright position.

The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy Hag staif embodying my invention as set up for use. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the upper and lower sections of the staff disconnected. Fig. 3 is a cross section through the base of the staff.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the base of the staff, which preferably comprises an oblong rectangular block, provided in its sides at equal distances on opposite sides of its transverse center with sockets or mortises 2 to receive tongues 3 upon the inner ends of a pair of supporting pins 4. rIhese pins extend laterally from the sides of the block and, by being arranged on opposite sides of the transverse center thereof, eifectually support the block and prevents the same from tilting under the weight of thestaif. It will be understood that the lower surfaces of the pins lie flush or in alinement with the lower surface of the block and thus form extended supports therefor.

The staff proper comprises a main or lower section 5 and a top or tip section 6, the said main section being provided at its lower end with a flaring tongue or portion 7 to enter a receiving socket S in the base, said socket being located centrally of said base. with a metallic socket or ferrule 9 to receive the reduced lower end 10 of the tip section 6, which latter is provided at its upper end with a guide 11, consisting preferably of an ordinary screw eye. In setting up the device for use the base 1 is rested upon the iioor or some other suitable support, the lower end of the section 5 iitted in the socket 8 and the lower end of the section 6 fitted into the ferrule 9. The section 5 is provided adjacent its lower end with'a cleat 12, or the like, forming a holder for the controlling cord or rope supporting the flag.

In the present illustration, the flag 13 is connected with an endless cord 14 which passes through the guide 11, so that by manipulation of the opposite stretches of the cord the flag may be raised and lowered in an obvious manner. The flag when raised may be supported in such position by simply winding the free end of the looped cord about the cleat 12, as indicated in Fig. 1.

It will be apparent from the foregoing description, that the invention provides a flag sta'l'l'I which may be cheaply manufactured of wood or metal, and that its parts may be conveniently associated or dissociated, thus enabling the staff to be packed in close compass for storage or shipment and readily set up or taken down.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

A toy flag staff comprising an oblong rectangular base block provided in its upper face with a central socket and in its sides on opposite sides of its transverse center with sockets, supporting pins having tenons to engage said sockets, the lower staff section adapted to be fitted at its lower end in the central receiving socket and provided at its upper end with a ferrule, an upper staff section provided with'a reduced lower end to enter the ferrule and carrying at its upper end a guide, a cleat upon the lower section, a cord extending through the guide, and a flag supported by the cord.
