CLARENCE RUSK, OF BUCKLIN, KANSAS.
FORCED-DRAFT APPLIANCE.
Application filed July 11,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE RUSK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bucklin, in the county of Ford, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forced-Draft Appliances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in forced draft appliances and it has particular reference to a forced draft appliance comprising a hand blower employed conjunctively with a stove pipe section and having for its function to provide means, whereby a forced draft may be created at option as in starting a fire.
The invention has for its object to provide a device of this character embodying a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the details of which will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts, throughout the several views, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a stove pipe section equipped with the apparatus forming the subject matter of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal view through such section and apparatus. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the apparatus, the stove pipe section being shown in section.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 5 designates the stove pipe section to which is secured a casing 6, the rear wall of which is concaved. to insure close engagement with the stove pipe as disclosed in Fig. 4 and which is provided with upper and lower extended lugs 7 affording substantial hangers for the casing 6 and being preferably riveted to the stove pipe section 5. The casing 6 is formed with a partition 8 depending from its top wall to an approximately central point and coacting with supplemental curved wall sections 9 to afford a fan housing 10 which is entirely open at its lower end and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908.
1907. Serial No. 383,204.
which communicates with the body of the casing 6, the latter being provided in its bottom, with a draft opening 11. Leading from the top of the fan housing 10 is an elbow pipe 12 which projects into the stove pipe section 5 and at its inner end has an upwardly directed discharge elbow 13, the pipe 12 thus serving to discharge the air from the casing 10 along the axial line of the stove pipe 5. Mounted in the lower part of the casing 6 is a transverse manually operated power shaft 14 carrying on its projecting end a crank handle 15 and intermediate of its ends a spur wheel 16, the latter meshing with a pinion 17 secured to a transverse fan shaft 18, journaled between the front and rear walls of the casing 6 and in the partition 8. The shaft 18 is arranged above the shaft 14- and within thefan casing 10, carries the radially projecting wings or fans 19 which are of suitable shape to close the space occurring between the side and top walls of the housing 10.
The provision of the curved. wall sections 9 materially increases the efficiency of the apparatus, in order that a maximum degree of draft may be obtained with a minimum expenditure of power. The invention is simple in its structural details, inexpensive to manufacture and practical and efficient in use, and may be applied readily to any stove pipe section.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that simple and efficient means are pro' vided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements herein shown and described are well adapted to serve the functions set forth, it is obvious that various minor changes may be made in the proportions, shape and arrangement of the several parts, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is A rectangular casing having anintake opening and being adapted to be secured to a stove pipe and provided with supporting lugs and a concaved rear wall to insure close engagement with an attached stove pipe, of a depending partition within the upper end of sald casing, of a curved wall between said rear wall and depending partition to form a fan housing entirely open below, a laterally projecting discharge pipe extending from the upper portion of said fan housing, a crank provided shaft within the lower portion of said casing, a gear on said shaft, a shaft extending through bearings within said partition, rear wall, and the front wall of said casing and being centrally positioned within said fan housing, a fan on said last mentioned shaft, and a pinion on said last mentioned shaft meshing with said gear.
In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
