U D TATES PATENT osrrcn. 1
CHARLES T. DRAPER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN (JAN COMPANY, OF
' NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SHEET-METAL DISPLAY-CAN.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES T. DRAPER, a
' citizen of the United States, residing in Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in SheetMetal Displayans, of which the follow'ingris a specification.
My invention relates tosheet metal dis play cans, and more articularly to improve- 7 ments upon the disp ay can forming the subject of the Rudolphi and Geiger patent 815,981 of March 27th, 1906, having a'brass or burnishable metal front plate furnished with a display opening at its ower part, and an external sign plate seat at its upper part, a removable inside fitting glass plate and a removable outside fitting sheet metalsign slot to receive the glass .holding tongue at the lower edge of the sign plate, in providing the glass holding tongue on the sign plate with an additional shoulder engaging the upper edge of the slot in the front plate, and
in furnishing the recessed portion of the front plate with a stud-like fastener riveted thereto, and in providing the sign plate with a cooperating spring cap fastener adapted to be pushed over and engage the stud fastener on ,the front plate and hold the two parts in firm, snug engagement with each other.
My invention also consists inv the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described.
In .the accompanying drawing, forming a :partof this specification Figure 1 is a per- .spective view of a display can embodying my invention; Fig. 2 1s a central vertical section on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 4 4 of. Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a .detailto view showing one corner of the can body; Fig.6 is a detail rear view'of the removable sign plate, and Fig. 7 is, an enlarged detail'sectlonal view of the intemngagingfasteners on the front plate and sign plate. 1-
Specification of Letters .Patent. Application filed 8eptember15\ 1906. Serial No. 33%8 07- Batented Feb. 11,1908.
In the drawings, A represents the three sheet metal upright side plates and B the sheet brass or burnisl'iable metal front plate, forming the body of the can, C the bottom plate and D the hinged cover. The bottom plate C is secured by external folded scams 0 to the lower edges of the side plates A and front plate B. At the upright corners of the body the sheet metal sides A and the front plate B are united by interfolded seams a. The upright side plates A of the body have at their upper ends horizon tal right angle flanges 0 preferably about one half inch in width,
and angle flanges 0. the lower edges of which meet and soldered to the vertical sidesA, thus forming hollow triangular stiffening and strengthening bars or braces A at the upper end of the can body at three sides thereof and at its remaining or front side there is a i similar hollow triangular stiflening and strengthening bar A, having a corresponding horizontal flange (1 and angle flange (1?. At the corners of the body the meeting hori zontal flanges a and meeting angle flanges a of the hollow strengthening bars or braces A A overlap each other and are securely :SOldOTPd together, thus forming a continuous hollow strengthening bar all around the upper end of the can body.
The brass front plate B has a display opening 13 in its lower portion surrounded by an inturned angle flange l) and a countersunk portion 15*, surrounded by a marginal wall or angle flange I), the countersink forming an external seat or recess to receive the externally fitting removable sheet metal si n plate F. I The brass front plate B has a fo (1 l) at its upper edge to give a smooth upper finish thereto, and it fits snugly against and is i supported by the hollow triangular strengthening bar A at the front side of the can, to which bar it is directly secured by an interfold or flange a". 'The thin brass front plate B is thus givena strong support atits upper end by the bar A and a much stronger and better construction is produced than in the cans'heretofore in use, where a slot or passage we is left between the 'bar A and the front ate B for the removal and inser tion of an inside fitting late.
- The hinged cover D as a right angle integral flange (l at three of its edges anda' front flange d of a separate piece and preferably of brass to correspond to the brass front B of the can body. I The loweredges of the cover a wire I), which completely surrounds the 3 cover and forms also the pivot of its hinge,
E is a removable inside fitting glass plate held in place at its lower end against the angle flange 1), surrounding the opening B in the brass front plate B, by a fixed guide E, preferably of sheet metal andsecured iminovably in lace by an angle flange ethereon which is em raced in the folds of the seam c, which unites the bottom plate C with the 1 front plate B of the can.
The removable externally fitting sheet metal sign plate F, having the name or sign printed or hthographed thereon in colors, fits in its seat or recess formed on theoutside of y the front plate B by the countersink B there' 1 in and is removably held in place at its lower j edge byan integral tongue f thereon, which fits in and extends through a suitable slot 7) in the front plate B at the base of the angle 1 flange b. The integral tongue'f on the sign plate has an integral extension or lipj' overhanging'and engaging the inner face of the glass late E at the upper end or edge thereof and a so preferably a shoulder or curved portion f which projects over the upper edge of theglass plate-E, and thus prevents the glass plate from slipping upward or tilting inward. The glass holding tongue f on the removable sign plate F is further provided with a supplemental shoulderf which fits under and engages the upper edge of the slot 1) in the front plate B, and thus positively locks the sign plate from slipping upward whenit is snuglysecured at its upper part to and against the recessed portion of the front plate.
To relnovably secure the outside fitting signplate F snugly and firmly against the recessed port )n of the front plate B, 1 provide the front plate at the upper part of its recessed portion with a stud-like fastening device If, having a rounded enlarged head If,
pen
and the sign plate l at its upper part with a cooperating spring-cap or spring-socket fastenerj". The two cof'iperating fasteners o n the two plates are engageable by simply firmly )ressing 'the sign plate against the front plate; The studiand spring cap fasteners may he disengaged when it is desired to remove the sign plate by simply insert inga knife blade or pointed instrument between the edge of the sign plate and front plate and prying the two apart.
The stud fastener b" is inserted through a suitable hole in the front plate and is secured rigidly thereto by a washer h" and an upset or riveting flange the one fitting outside and the other inside the front plate The spring cap or socket fastener f is inserted through asuitable hole in the sign plate and is secured thereto by a head or llang'ef fitting outside I the sign plate, and an upset or rivetingflange f fitting onfthe inner side of the sign plate. 1
The spring socket or rap fastenerf has radial 1 slots fto give its segment f the. required spring action to enable the same to snap over the enlarged rounded head If of the stud fastener 5 the stud fastener is attached, to form the j seat I), as iniilicatedin Fig. 7, thereby perl mitting the sign plate to be held by the fastener with its rear face in flat eontaetwitli the front face of the plate B and preventing any tilting of the sign plate on the fastener. (By this means the removable external sign 1 plate is snugly and firmly held in. place and is l prevented from slipping or yielding in any l direction, so that its integral tonguef server; l to effectually hold the glass plate sl'iugly against the edge of the angle flange 1) suri rounding the lower or display opening in the front plate, while at the same time the sign plate may be readily removed when it is re 'quired to rebuff 'or repolish the brass front plate of the can, and also readily replaced.
As in my improved can when the sign plate and glass plateare removed, there are no sign plateiir glass plate holding devices secured on the inside ofthe front plate, the interior of the can can be easily and perfectly cleanedout, as there are no obstructions to interfere-with the cleaning of the can on the inside.
I claim: v p
1. In a display can, the combination with the front plate having 'a display opening therein, of a removable inside fitting glass plate, anda removable outside fitting sign plate having a tongue on the lower part thereof which passes behind and engages the plate, and at the upper part of the sign plate movably united to the front plate, the said fastenerdevices ai-fin'g indepemlently of the engagement ol'ithe tongue with the glass plate and to hold the sign plate and tongue with the front of the can or towards or from the glass plate-\vhieh the tongue engages, substantially asset forth. 2. In a display can, the combination with the front plate having a display opening therein and a slot 1), of a removable inside fitting glass plate, and a removable outside fitting sign plate having a tongue thereon passing through the said slot and behind the glass plate, the tongue having a shoulder which bears downward on the upper edge of l the glassplate and a supplmnental shoulder The front plate 13 is i nwardlv bent, where glass plate to hold itagainst the said front separable fastener devices one surrounding which the upper partof the sign plate is 're-' from movement in any direction parallel" plate, and a removable outside fitting sign plate having an integral tongue thereon engaging the upper edge of the glass plate to hold it in place,- said front plate having a slot through which said tongue on the sign plate rojects, and said tongue on the sign plate having a shoulder fitting under and engaging the upper edge of the slot in the front plate,
