This invention relates to improvements in railroadrails, the object of which is to provide rails whereby the cars, may be secured against the liability of run-l, niggoif from the track, and to provide more durable ra s; It consists in an improved manner of joining the ends of the rails, and securing them to the ties.
Also, of an improved construction of the rails', whereby the'cars, when constructed according to improvements which form the subject of an application by me be securely prevented from running off the track.

I propose to construct my improved rails consider-` ably larger than they are commonly made, and provide the ends' with lap-joints, and rivet them together,
as represented vin the drawings, where the r'ail A is provided with a recess in the end, which receives the reduced end of the rail B; and
C represents a rivet, holding the top portionsrof the rail together, while the bottom portions of the joints are held by the rivets D and by the hook-headed spikes, which are driven down into the recesses F in the base of the rail.
The rivets, or bolts C, are placed on the outer side of the .head of the rail, and 'the head is extended inward for a considerable distance beyond the vertical web G, as represented at H, iig. 3, in order to afford a means for preventing the carsfrom running on' the track, when they are so constructed as to carry auxiliary Wheels, suspended from the trucks, so as to project iuto the space between thesaid extension H and the base of the rail.
I` claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The rails A B, constructed as described, one, A, being provided with a recess, and adapted to receive the reduced end of the other, B, both being secured together by the vertical bolts O, passing through their upper portions, as herein described, for the purpose specied.
The above specication of my inventionsigned by me, this 13th day of October, 1868. v
PERRY PRETTYMAN.
