To ALLWHOMIT MAY eoNennN:
Be it known that I, ALBERT Gr. BD ZBY, of Philadelphia, eountyof Philadelphia, State ol Pennsylvania, have inventedalip for Railroad-Rails; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of thesamc.
My invention-consists of a clip composed of a thin plate of steel, hentand applied toa rail or rails, substantially as described hereafter, so as to cover the gaps between adjacent' rails, and prevent th 'aus shocks and jars. which occur when theearqvheels pass thesega'ps.` My improved clip is also applicati patch for wounded rails.
, In order to enable others to make and apply my invention, I will new proceed to describe .its cfxzistru'ction and operation, referencebeing had to the accompanying' drawing, which forms apart of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view otf my improved clip for railroad-rails.`
Figure 2, a transverse section. on the line 1-2, iig. l. Y
' Figure 3, a sectional view et' the upper portion of one of thcvraiis.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several vicws.`
The ,rails to which my improved clip is applied are in the 4presentinstance ofthe ordinary form, having ythe -usual treada, web b, and lower iianges (Z and d. v i
Annul A', 1, represent the ends of. two adjacent rails, the open space between which is rep-resented by the dotted lines z fr. 'a
B -is the clip, one-half of which is arranged to embrace the end of 'one rail, A, the other half embracing the end of the adjacent rail, A', in the manner-illustrated in iig. 2.
The clip consists of a thin 'plate of s teel,`ben t'in the m idd1e,so as to'be adapted to the treads of the railsz eii'eetive curved inwards at the sides, so as to approach but not be in contact withthe web-@and one end ot' the plate' is bent beneathone of thc'ianges, (Z, and the lother bene-ath the 'opposite angefoZQas-'shown at@ y, iig. 1, or the ends of the plate which forms the clip may be bent beneath a platc,f, underla'pping both rails.
The treads ofvboth rails are recessed, as show-nat t, `fr. 3, to reccivethe clip, so that the upper surface of v i thevlatter may be levelAvith thejupper surface of the main portion ofthe rai toany portion of a rail the tread ef which has been unduly worn, the -clip servi-ng 'as a pat-cli. ier
, V Two bolts, m m, pass, one through the web bof one rail, and one through that oi' the adjacent rail, both bolts'pa'ssing through the clip and through barsl) D, one on one side and the other on the opposi de of the said clip, so that on tightening the nuts of vthe said bolts, vthe"clip-will be contracted und drawn t over the recessed portions oi'- the ends of 'the two rails," j
'-flhe holes in the clip through which the bolts pass are such that the rails can expand and contract to a I limited extent, independently of each other.
'There is'always more or less of au open space betr-:een the rails of' railroads, and it is well linon'n that owing to this open spacethe ends ofthe rails are more rapidly worn`than other portions, the car-wheels passing aci-oss the-'open spaces causing such'shochs and jars as to injnriously-ai'cc't the iron at these points, at the saaie time injuring the wheels' themselves, while they arev the main 'cause of the wear and tear of both the running-gear und permanent portions of cars andlocomotivesg j v The object of my invention is to so cover the gaps between the'rails that these injurious shocks cannot occur, a duty eifectually accomplished bythe abovc-describedclip, whichcan be-drawn so f over tlic treads of the rails as to become essentially. a part ofth'e same. i The utility of my invention is not limited to the joints of rails, as vthe clip may be applied n' td vantage wounded portieri.V
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent clip compo-sed of' a thin flexible platebf steel'or tough iron, b'entand applied to a ru'il or rails, substan. tially as and for the purpose hereinset forth,
In testimonywhereoi", I have signed my unime to this speeiicationin the presence ofl two subscribing witnesses.
