JAMES S. SGHOONOVER, OF CORRY, PENNSYLVANIA.
Leners Patent No. 82,645, dated september' 29, ,1868.
IMPROVBD RAILWAY-RAIL JOINT.
. TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
' Be it known that I, JAMES S. SeHooNoVER, of Corry, in the county of Erie, and in the Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Suspension Railroad-RailfIoint Fastening; and elo-hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a 'device for uniting the joints f rails which guarantees a firmness, j durability, and consequent increased seeurityfrom accident unequalled by any of the ordinary methods of railjoint fastenings. n A i s I l In order to enable others skilled in the'art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a p'art'of this speeitieatiomand in wliich- Figure l is a plan of two rails united in accordance with my improvement hereinafter set forth. Figure 2, a plan of one rail with jaws upon its anges. Figure 3, a plan ofthe gripe. Figure 4, across-section, taken at line yy, iig. 2; and Figure 5 is a cross-section of my improvement complete, taken through line e: z, fig. 1. A A represent two rails, mad'e in any of the known and usual ways, which are joined together. y The'jaws B B are grooved, as seen in figs. 4 and 5, into which the flanges of the railsy enter.
These jaws are held firmly in place by means of notches in the anges of the rails, and correspondingl pins on the innert side of the jaws, as shown by' dotted lines in fig. 4, thereby preventing a forward or backward motion of the jaws upon thevflanges of the rail. I i
Thejaw B has a depression or indentation, cl, of suicient width to receive and hold in its place the gripe or clasp C, which consists of a metal bar, with -its ends bent over upwards to enclose the jaws B andB" v When thus clasping the rails aud jaws, it binds the whole together l) \,"1nealns` of the key e, which is made in the shape of a wedge, and inserted between said clasp and thejaw B. j
The key e is split, so as to form a. spring-wedge. Y Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desircto secure by Letters l"a1':cnt,.isv The jaws B I3', provided with the' pins or ribs on their'inner surface, engaging with the corresponding notchesv on the bases or anges of the `rails, as shown in iig. 4, and with the recess rl for preventing the endplay ofthe clamp C, in combination with the splitwedge' E and the clamp C, all constructed and arranged sub stantially as set forth. v Y In testimony that Ielaim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 12th day of June, 1868..
JAMESv S. SGIIOONOVER.
