Description

(No Model.) J. ALBRECHT. COMBINED RAIL CHAIR AND TIE.
Patented Sept. 24, 1895.
M. PHOTOUTHQWASNMHON D C wire STATES ja'rnNr Orr-ion.
JOHN ALBRECHT, OF MASSILL ON, OHIO.
COMBINED RAIL CHAIR AND TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 546,800, dated September 24, 1895.
Application filed May 1, 1896. Serial No. 547,745. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that 1, JOHN ALBRECHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massillon, in the county of Stark and State ofOhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Rail Chair and Tie; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the tie, showing the rail-locking dogs placed in proper position, also showing a transverse section of the railway-rails. Fig. 2 is an end view of the railway-tie, showing an edge View of one of the locking-dogs, also showing a railwayrail placed in proper position upon the tie. Fig. 3 is a detached View of one of the raillocking dogs. Fig. 4 is a view showing a portion of the bottom plate of the tie. Fig. 5 is a detached view of the locking key or wedge. Fig. 6 is a view showing a portion of the tie and illustrating one of the openings for inserting the locking-dogs.
The present invention has relation to acombined rail chair and tie; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawlugs.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the top or upper section of the tie proper, which is substantially of the form shown in Figs. 2 and'6, and, as shown, saidsection consists of a channel-bar formed of proper size and strength to produce atie to properly support and hold the railway-rails, and for the purpose of forming a base of sulficient width the sides of the section A are flared, substantially as illustrated in the drawings; but it will be understood that the sides may be formed at right angles to the top andbottom of the tie properwithout departing from the nature of myinvention. The bottom or lower portions of the sides of the section A are provided with the flanges a, which flanges are for the purpose of providing a means for properly securing the bottom or base B to the section or portion A by means of suitable rivets or their equivalents. The bottom B is provided with thelongitudinal groove 1), which groove may be formed throughout the entire length of the bottom plate B.
The locking-dogs O are substantially of the form shown, and, as shown, they are provided with the curved portions 0, which curved por tions are for the purpose of properly abutting against the inner faces of the railway-rails d.
The locking-dogs D are formed substantially as illustrated in the drawings, and, as shown, they are provided with the curved portions 6, said curved portions being so arranged that they will properly abut against the outer faces of the railway-rails.
The bottom or lower ends of the dog's O and D are each provided with the ribs f, which ribs are entered or seated in the groove 1), said ribs and groove being for the purpose of securely holding the dogs 0 and D against lateral displacement.
The top or upper portion of the section A is provided with the openings g, which openings are for the purpose of providing ameans for properly entering the locking-dogs O and D.
For the purpose of preventing any upward movement of the looking-dogs after they have been placed in proper position the openings 9 are provided with the narrowed portions g, into which narrowed portions the dogs are slipped, so as to properly engage the shoulders g on the dogs 0 under the top of the section A.
For the purpose of securely looking or binding the dogs O and D the keys or wedges E are provided, which keys or wedges are placed in the position illustrated in Fig. 1. For the purpose of preventing any accidental displacement of the keys or wedges E the sides of said keys or wedges are roughened or slightly serrated, as illustrated in the drawings.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is
1. The combination of the section A, having secured to the bottom or lower portion of said section the plate B, provided with the groove 1), the locking dogs 0 and D, provided with the ribs f, and the keys or wedges E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a hollow tie provided with a grooved bottom, the locking dogs provided with ribs upon their bottom or lower ends, and the serrated keys or wedges, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a railway tie the section A, provided with flaring sides, the grooved bottom B, secured to the section A, the locking dogs having ribs formed upon their bottom or lower ends, and means for securing said locking dogs, substantially as and for the purpose to specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ALBRECHT. Witnesses:
JEROME L. SMITH, F. W. BOND.
