J. A. new;
COMBINED RAILWAY TIE AND CHAIR. 'No. 533,941. Patented Feb. 12, 1895.
the letters of UNITE STATES JOHN A. YAST, or MASSILLON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE*HALF TO WAGNER, OF SAME PLAoE.
PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS COMBINED RA|LWAY TIIE AN D CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 533,941, dated February 12, 1895.
? Applihation filed January 2,1895- seriti Nor 533,541. (No model.)
Toall' whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN A. YAST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massillon, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Railway Tie and Chair;
and I. do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to reference 'marked thereon, in whichg Figure 1, is a longitudinal section of the tie, showing the rail holding dogs placed in proper position to hold the railway rails. Fig. 2, is an end view of the tie, showing a portion of a railway rail located thereon. Fig. 3, is a view, showing a portion of a top plate, and illustrating one of the dog backing plates. Fig. 4 is a detached View of one of the outer rail holding dogs. Fig. 5, is a detached view of one of the inner rail holding dogs. Fig. 6 is a detached view of one of theldog backing plates. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a portion of the tie, showing a transverse section of a rail, and illustrating the position of the dogs.
The present invention has relation to combined railway ties-and chairs, and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. I
In the accompanying drawings A represents the tie proper, which is formed hollow,'and as shown it consists of the top plate (land the bottom plate I), said plates being securely riveted or bolted to the side plates c, which side plates are preferably channel bars or plates. The top or upper plate a is provided with the openingsor slots (1, which slots are located between'the ends of the tie proper.
The outer dogs B, are substantially of the form shown and as shown they are provided with the curved extensions ewhich extensions the'outer dogs B the plates D are provided which plates are located substantially as illustrated in the drawings, and are securely riveted to the top plate a. The object and purpose of providing the backing plates D is to relieve the strain from the top plate a when great strain is brought upon the dogs B.
It will be understood that the plates D-can be secured to the ties at the factory, inasmuch as the plates are not changed as to their position after they have been properly placed upon the ties.
For the purpose of assisting in holding the dogs 0 in proper position with reference to the rails they are provided with the webs g, which webs are entered into the hollow portion of the tie proper, and for the purpose of assisting in holding therails f the webs g are provided with the shoulders h, which shoulders are so located that they will come di-, rectly under the bottom of the rail f.
Having fully described myinvention, what I'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-= The combination .of the hollow tie A, the openings or slots (1 located in the top portion of the tie, the backing plates D secured to the plate a, the outer dogs B, provided with the curved extensions 6, the inner dogs 0, provided with the shoulders h, and the rails, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
In testimony that; I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. I JOHN A. YAST.
Witnesses:
LOUIS WAGNER, F. W. Born).
