the cut or severed end of the ribbon may be' fastened to thebolt after the desired length of ribbon has been unwound and detached from said bolt.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fastener including oppositely disposed piercing members adapted to engage the opposite sides of the bolt or reel, said members being connected by a flexible medium which bears against the cut or severed end of the ribbon and serves to prevent accidental displacement of the same.
A still further object of the invention is to generally improve this class of devices so. as to increase their utility, durability and efficiency as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.
Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forminga part of this specification: Figure l is a perspective view of a ribbon fastener or retainer constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same in position on a bolt or reel. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same showing in dotted lines the fastener in inoperative position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastener detached.
Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating a modified form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating a further modification.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
The improved device is principally designed for attachment to a ribbon bolt or reel for retaining the cut or severed end of the ribbon in position on the bolt after the desired length of ribbon has been unwound therefrom and by way of illustration is shown in connection with a ribbon bolt of the ordinary construction in which 5 designated the bolt or reel and 6 the ribbon.
The fastener consists of an elastic cord 7 to one end of which is secured a plate 8 having its central portion formed with an up.-
struck point or piercing member 9 ada ted to engage the adjacent wall of the b0 t 5, said plate being provided with a laterally extending ear or lug 10 ada ted to be folded over the adjacent termina .of the cord 7 thereby to hold the cord inposition on the plate. Rigidly secured to the opposite end of the flexible connection or cord 7 is a piercing needle 11 the latter bein preferably formed of a single piece of meta having one end thereof provided with a piercing .point 12 and its intermediate portion provided with a retaining car 13 adapted to be pressed laterally and downwardly in engagement with the cord 7, as shown.
In using the device the pointed termma-l of the needle 11 is inserted through one wall of the reel 5 and positioned within the compartment 14 of said reel with the ear 13 bearing against the adj acent interior wall of said compartment, as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The opposite end of the cord 7 is extended transversely across the ribbon 6 and a downward pressure exerted on the plate 8 until the desired tension is. obtained after which the pointed terminal 9 is inserted through the adjacent wall of the bolt or reel thus locking the fastener in position on said reel. In order to unwind the ribbon it is merely necessary to exert a slight lateral pull on the plate 8 when the piercing member 9 will be disengaged from the wall of the bolt so that the .cord 7 may be swung laterally and downwardly to the dottedline position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings thus permitting the ribbon to be freely unwound from the bolt. After the desired length of ribbon has been unwound from the bolt the cut or severed end of the latter is locked against accidental displacement by passing the end It will also be observed that by positioning 7 the piercing member 11 within the compartthe fastener in position on said bolt and at the same time permit the fastener to be swung downwardly at one side of the bolt when the ribbon is being unwound from the bolt.
A further modification is shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings in which the plate 8 is provided with a split reinforcing ring 16 one end of which is bent laterally to form a terminal piercing member 17 adapted to engage the adjacent wall of the bolt-or reel, the marginal edge of the plate 8 being bent laterally and downwardly in engagement with the ring 16 thereby to secure the ring in position on said late. p From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simple, inexpensive and efficient device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. The combination with a ribbon reel, of
a relatively stationary anchoring member piercing one side of the reel, a movable anchoring member comprising a plate having an integral upstruck attaching spur adapted to pierce the opposite side of the reel, and rovided with a laterally extending lug an an elastic cord forming a .connection between the stationary anchoring member and the lateral lug of the movable member and extended transversely across the reel for engagement with the adjacent surface of the ribbon, said movable member being adjustable to different positions on the adjacent side of the reel thereby to vary the tension of the cord.
2. A ribbon fastener including a plate provided with a flat bearing surface and having a portion thereof pressed laterally to form an up-struck piercing point, an elongated needle provided with a pointed terminal, an elastic cord connecting the plate and needle, a lug extending laterally from one end of the plate and engaging the adjacent end of the cord, and an attaching ear projecting from one longitudinal edge of the needle and spaced from the polnted terminal thereof for engagement with the opposite end of the cord.
