Description
No. 878,455. PATENTED FEB. 4, 1908.
L. D. CARTER. ADJUSTABLE BRACKET.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 10. 1907.
I Vi ha e002:
LLEWELLYN D.'CAF-TE R, OF MUSCATINE, IOWA.
ADJUSTABLE BRACKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 4, 1908.
application filed September 10. 1907. Serial N0. 392.222.
, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L EwELLYN D. CAR-y TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Brackets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in scaffold brackets and it has more particular reference to a bracket of this type, including ad'ustably connected elements for securing t e same to posts of varymg sizes.
The invention aims as a primary object to provide a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, the details of which will appear in the course of the following description in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, like characters of reference designating similar parts throughout the several views, wherein:
Figure 1 is an enlarged side elevation I showing the manner of use of the bracket comprehended in the present invention, Fig. 2 1S'& etailed perspective view of such bracket, Fig. 3 1s a detailed perspective view of a cam comprehended in the invention, and, Fig. 4 is a cross section on the line 44'of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 designates a supporting 0st and the numeral 6 designates generall y the bracket forming the subject matter of the present invention. The bracket 6 includes a casting 7 of L-shape and to th'e'respective faces of which are secured the back piece 8 and the shelf piece 9. If desired, said back piece and said shelf with .the casting 7. It is not deemed necessary to illustrate the construction last suggestedbut merely to mention it in as'sing.
Projecting laterally from each side of the casting 7 are round pins 10 which are depiece may be made integral signed for engagement as pivots through selected ones of a series of openings 11 provided at one end of side straps 12, the latter being formed at their other ends with openings 13 to receive pins 14 projecting axially from the ends of a gripping cam 15 having its working face roughened as at 16 to frictionally grip the face of the post 5.
It will be apparent that the provision of the openings 11 afl'ord means for adjusting the straps 12 at selected lengths upon the pins 10 whereby the device may be applied to posts of varying sizes. The greater the weight u on the shelf piece 9, the greater the degree 0 frictional ripping action of the cam 15 owing to its'ro ling roughened gripping surface.
The invention is simple in its structural details, inexpensive to manufacture and prac' tical and efficient in use.
What is claimed is z 1. A bracket of the type set forth comprising an L-shaped casting, a back piece and a shelf piece secured to the res ective angular faces thereof, said casting aving laterally projecting pins, side straps having at corresponding ends thereof series of openin s, said pins being designed for engagement se ectively through said openings, said straps being formed at. their outer ends with 0 ,enings and a cam shaped grip ing member aving axially pro'ectmg pins or engagement in said last name openings.
' -2. A bracket of the type set forth,com
prising in combination with a sup orting post, a bracket structure designed to e held against said post, arms pivoted to said bracket structure and designed for adjustment to selected positions with relation thereto, and a gripping element carried by said arms for engagement with said post. In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
' LLEWELLYN D. CARTER.
