Application filed. July lil; 1906. Serial No. 326'919i I T o all whom tt may concern: a
Be it known that i ANDREW ScHALLnR a f 1 i' '1 1 ,UL .L 7 citizen or tne'b inted mates, residing at Perrvsburg, in the county of l/lood, State of hio, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Wrenches 5 and I do hereby dec are the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as lwill enable others skilled in the art to which it a ertains to make and use .the same.`
T s invention relates to wrenches, and has for its object to provide awrench of the handle operated sliding jaw type, having means for holding the sliding jaw at any desired point when tightening or loosening at -is a side elevation of the wrench, Fig. 2 is a vertical Sectional view theretlrough, and, Fig. 3 is an edge view thereof partly in section.
Referring more ings, the numeral the wrench, and pieces, which are formed integral therewith and of resilient metal for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The nut engaging portion of the jaw 6 extends above the upper edges of thecheek-pieces, and through the said jaw is an opening 8, through which is slidably engaged the shank 9 of a sliding jaw 10. The jaw IQ is of greater width than its shank, thus forming shoulders ll, which rest specifically to the draw- 6 denotes the fixed jaw of upon the upper edges of the cheek-pieces 7,`
and the underside of the said shank is of rack formation, as indicated at 12.
Pivoted between the cheek-pieces 7, below the shank 9 of the jaw 10, is the headed end 13 of a handle 1d, the said headed end of the handle being substantially circular in form, and provided at its periphery with teeth 15, upon the shank 9 of the sliding jaw, whereby the jaw may be moved when the handle is oscillated.
ln order that the jaw 10 may be held in 7 spaced parallel cheekwhich mesh with the rack teeth. 12 p one position after being adjusted to suit a series of nuts of the same size which are to be turned, a set screw 16 is engaged through an opening 17 in one of the cheek-pieces 7 and a threaded opening 18 in the other cheek-piece, at the opposite end thereof to the jaw 6, and is provided with a winged head by means of which it may be turned to tighten the grip of the cheek-pieces 7 upon the shank 9 of the jaw 10, and thereby hold the'-v jaw against movement. I y
In the form of. my invention shown in Fig. 5, ,a bifurcated sliding jaw 19.i`s provided, which may be engaged with tacks or nails 'and the handle 14 oscillated to pull or extract the same.
What is claimed is- 1. A wrench ofthe class described comprising a fixed jaw, spaced cheek pieces form- 'ed integral with the jaw, the* said jaw being provided with a slot, a movable jaw vhaving a stern ofrack formation engaged through the slot, a handle pivoted at one of its ends between the cheek pieces and provided with teeth for engagement with the rack upon the stern portion of the movable jaw, a threaded' bolt engaged through the 'cheek pieces at their ends opposite to the ends at which the fixed jaw is located, and a thumb nutengage-d upon the threaded bolt.
2. ,A wrench of the class described com-- integral with the jaw and extending forwardly therefrom in parallel relation, theV said jaw being provided with a slot the side walls of which are coincident with the inner walls of the cheek pieces, a movable jaw having a stern of rack formation engaged through the slot, the side faces of the stern and the portion of the jaw being confined between the cheek pieces, a handle pivoted at one of its ends between the cheek pieces, said handle being provided with teeth at its said end for engagement with the rack uponl the stem portion of the movable jaw, the cheek pieces being extended considerably beyond the said end of the handle, a threaded bolt engaged through the portions of vthe cheek pieces which extend beyond the said end of the handle, a thumb nut engaged upon, the bolt, the bolt being provided at one of its ends with a head which bears against the outer fades of one of the cheek pieces and the I thumf mit eilg adtlptedhto leer against the i in presence ef 'two Witnesses.
