To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BROWN, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surface- Trimming Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved surface trimming machine for carpets and the like, and has for its object to trim the surface of carpets and similar fabrics at the meeting edges where it is desired to form a seam.

Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical view in section taken along the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the pressure roll bracket. Fig. 5 is a erspective view of the adjustable guide emp oyed to determine the width of the surface to be trimmed. Fig. 6 is an enlarged perspective view of the loose j ournalbearing 9. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the edge of a strip of carpet, the margin of which has been trimmed. Fig. 8' is a transverse sectional view of two carpet sections which have been trimmed and brought together at the meeting edges.
As indicated in the drawings, I employ a motor 10 whereby the gear 11 is driven, the gear 11 intermeshing with the gear 12. The shaft 13 is driven by the gear 12 and carries the cylindrical cutter 14.
The entire machine is mounted upon a base-plate 15, and on the base-plate the ver tical post 16 is provided, which has a lateral bore 17 in which the rod 18 is slidably mounted, and may be fixed in any desired position by means of the set-screw 19. The rod 18 is fixed at its outer extremity with the vertical member 20 which carries the screws 21. The member 22 is provided with an outwardly extending flange 23 and is slotted as indicated by the numeral 24 to adjustably engage with the screws 21.
The width of the swath to be cut by the cylindrical cutter 14 is determined by adjusting the member 20 inwardly or outwardly, as desired. The fabric is to be introduced beneath the flange 23, and the flange 23 is adjusted upwardly or down- Wardly by means of the screws 21 to accommodate itself to the thickness of the fabric whose surface is to be trimmed.
The pressure roll 25 is mounted in the bracket 26 and projects through the opening 27in the base-plate 15. The bracket 26 is provided with an adjusting screw 28, and is held upwardly so that the point of the screw 28 is in contact with the bottom of the baseplate 15, by means of the spring 29.
Interposed between the cylindrical cutter 14 and pressure roll 25 is the knife 30 adjustably mounted in the block 31 by means of the screws 32; the fabric, being trimmed by means of the cylindrical cutter 14 and knife 30, passes beneath the knife 30 and along the surface of the base-plate 15 until it engages with the friction rolls 33 and 34. These friction rolls are driven by the gear 35 mounted on the shaft 13 and intermeshing with the gear 36, mounted on the shaft 37 and driving the gear 38. The gear 38, in turn, intermeshes with the gear 39 which drives the shaft 40 carrying the friction roll 34. The shaft 40 carries the gear 41 intermeshing with the gear 42, by which the shaft 43 carrying the friction roll 33 is driven. The shaft 43 is journal'ed in the block 44 and the block 44 is carried, by the yoke 45, whose terminals proj ect upwardly through the base-plate 15 and are provided with springs 46. The shaft 43 being thus resiliently journaled, the friction roll 33 is provided with a degree of flexibility which enables fabric of any desired thickness to pass between its upper surface and the bottom of the stationary friction roll 34.
The surface of the carpet or like fabric having been trimmed away as indicated by the numeral 47 in Fig. 7, such trimmed marginal portion of the fabric is brought in contact with a similarly trimmed marginal portion of another strip of the fabric in the manner indicated by Fig. 8, the trimmed surfaces being secured together by stitchesor otherwise, as indicated by the numeral 48, thereby giving to the carpet or like fabric a continuous, unbroken and practically seamless surface.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is:
1. In a surface trimming machine, a cutting member, means for drawing the fabric through the cutting member and means for determining the width of the surface to be trimmed, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a cutting member, friction rolls whereby the fabric is drawn beneath the cutting member, a
pressure roll whereby the fabric is thrown against the cutting member, and a guide for determining the Width of the surface to be trimmed, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, a train of gears, friction rolls driven by the gears, a
cylindrical cutter driven by the gears, means I for subjecting the margin of a fabric to the action of the cutter, and means for determinin the Width of the margin to be trimmed, 15 su stantially as described.
