HINTHORN, a citizen of the UnitedStates', residing at Hiawatha, in the county .of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Trimmers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,

and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to new'and useful improvements in machines for trimming cur- ,tains; and it has for its object, primarily, to

provide a machine of this character with which the edges of a curtain can be uniformly and smoothly trimmed and one which will be especially simple in construction, durable, economical, and reliable in use.

With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent in the courseof the following description, all lookingtoward simplifying and improving devices of this character generally, my invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which Will be hereinafter fully described, and the points of novelty will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

I am enabled to accomplish the objects of my invention by the simple means illustrated r in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective'view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a transverse section showing a curtain in position to be trimmed in dotted lines, and Fig.5 is a detail perspective view of the knife-carrying blocks.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates two end pieces which are connected by a base-piece 2 and longitudinal strips '3 and 4. The strips 3 and 4, as shown in the drawings, are secured to the upper edges of the end and suitably spaced apart to form a longitudinalslot 5, through which extend two inclined knives 6, carried by blocks 7, provided with tongues 8, extending into longitudinal grooves 9, formed near the lower end of a depending member 10. Said member is providedwith a longitudinal slot 11, extend ing throughout the entire length thereof, for the passage of set-screws 13, one of which is secured to the rear side of each knife-carrying block for the obvious purpose of adjusting the blocks laterally with relation to each other. The numeral 14 indicates a knifeguard having arms 15 secured to either end thereof and extending from the side pieces, to which pieces said arms are pivoted, as indicated by the numeral 16.

At the extreme front edge of the base-piece I provide an inclined longitudinal strip 17,

which extends parallel with a strip 18, and

between said strips I provide two sliding brackets 19, perforated in theirupper portions, as indicated by the numeral 20. Secured to the front edge of the base, about midway of the length thereof, is a keeper 22,

;in which is adapted to slide a wedge 23, by which means thestrip 17 is caused to move inwardly and outwardly to maintain the brackets iniadj usted position or permit them to be slid to any desired point.

The strip 17 is removable and forms part of the track upon which the brackets 19 have movement, said strip being tightened or regulated by the wedge 23. The strip 17 assists in' supporting the brackets and is applied against the outer portion of. the latter,'the wedge 23 being sufiiciently long to hold the said strip in position, and of course the degree of tightness of bearing of the said strip against the outer portions of the brackets will depend: upon the force with which the wedge is driven into the keeper 22.

The brass rod 27 is then removed and inserted through the hole in the central portion of the curtain, and the rod is then replaced in the brackets and said brackets properly adjusted. The width or the amount of material to be trimmed from the curtain is then ascertained and the knives are properly adjusted. hen the curtain-roll is grasped and pulled toward the rear of the machine, it is obvious the knives will trim the desired amount of material from the edges of the curtain.

It is obvious that the invention herein set forth is susceptible to minor changes and modifications involving mechanical skill, which may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof, and I do not, therefore, desire to limit myself to the precise construction shown.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the character described comprising a suitable frame slotted in the direction of its length, laterally-adjustable knives extending through said slot, a knife-guard pivoted to said frame and adapted to be rocked upon the knives for the purpose setfortl1,suitably guided laterally adjustable brackets perforated for the reception of a rod, said rod being adapted to enter the curtain-roll, means for securing the knives at any desired point throughout the length of the machine, and means for similarly securing the laterally-adjustable brackets, substantially as described.

2. A device of the character described composed of end pieces, asuitable base secured to said end pieces, strips secured to the end pieces above the base and suitably spaced apart to form a longitudinal slot, a depending member secured to the rear strip and provided with a slot and a groove therein, blocks carrying knives extending through the slot, said blocks being provided with lugs or proj ections extending into said groove, set-screws or their equivalents passing through the slot in the depending member and into the knifecarrying blocks, whereby said blocks are held in adjusted position, a knife-guard pivoted to the frame and adapted to be rocked upon the knives, laterally-ad j ustable brackets suitably guided at one side of the machine, arod extending between said brackets, and means for adjustably securing said brackets, substantially as described.

The herein-described device comprising a suitable base and suitable end pieces secured to said base, strips secured to the end pieces and suitably spaced apart to form a slot, the member depending from one of the strips adjacent to the slot, said member being provided with a longitudinal slot and a groove, laterally-adjustable knife-carrying blocks having knives extending through the slot in the top strip, said blocks being provided with set-screws or their equivalents passing through the slot in the depending member and lugs or projections extending into the groove in said member, a knife-guard pivoted to the end pieces and adapted to be rocked upon the knives, parallel strips at the front edge of the machine, brackets maintained and guided between said strips, said brackets being perforated for the reception of the rod, a keeper secured to the front edge of the machine and having the wedge therein adapted to be operated to move the outer strip against the bracket to maintain the same in adjusted position or permit it to be moved, substantially as described.
