TIGICET-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.-
' Application filed May 17. 1907. Serial No. 374-118 erence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ticket-holders, and its primary object is, to rovide a device of this character ada to to facilitate the sale and delivery of tie ets printed upon a continuous slip of paper, and wound upon a reel or like central support.
A further object of the invention is, to provide a guide, through which the ticket slip is drawn by hand to expedite the delivery and detaching of tickets from the strip.
A further object of the invention is to provide a guide-way for the ticket slip, having figures or other characters shown to guide the ticket seller in detaching a pro-determined number of tickets.
Further objects of the invention will be disclosed as the description thereof proceeds, and the construction of the improvement will be fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part' of this specification, and its features of novelty defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing-Figure 1 is. a view in perspective of a ticket case or holder embodying the invention, Fig. 2 is a similar view of a modified construction of the device, Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the case or holder shown in Fig. 1 with its hinged cover removed, Fig. 4 is a similar view of the modification shown in Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a central vertical section on anenlargedscale of the case or holder shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 6 is a side elevation of another modification, and, Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the folding indicator shown in Fig. 6.
Referring now to Figs. 1, 3 and 5, the reference numeral 1 designates a box perfectly square, as shown, and constructed of wood or other suitable material. This box is provided with a cover consisting of a frame 2 hinged at its rear side to the box, and a plate 3 of transparent material, preferably glass, secured within the frame 1 by a molding 4.
The front edge of the box is provided with desired form of clasp or fastening device 5, for detachably securing the cover, and with a handle 6 by means of which the box may be conveniently carried.
The bottom 7 of the box is formed on its upper surface with a central circular recess 8 to receive an annular flange 9 projectingfrom the lower end of a metallic sleeve 10, which is secured in position by screws 11 extending through the flange 9 and into the bottom of the box. The upper surface of the flange 9 is flush with the upper surface of the bottom of the box. Over the sleeve 10 is revolubly fitted another'sleeve 12 formed at its upper end with an annular fiange- 13 and having its other end resting on the flange 9 of the inner stationary sleeve. These sleeves 10 and 12 constitute an axial support or reel for the ticket strip which is wound upon the outer sleeve 12 in the form of a roll 14 before said sleeve 12 is slipped over the stationary sleeve.
The right hand first corner of the box is.
provided with a vertical slot 15 formedv by recessing the adjacent end of the front of the box and within this slot extends one end of a sheet metal guide 16 through which the outer end 17 of the ticket roll 14 extends. This guide 16 is preferably formed from a single piece of=thin sheet metal bent into contracted U-shape in cross-section and have the front ends 18 and 19 of its walls bent apart and secured to the inner sides of the front and adjacent side of the box. The guide extends rearward along the side of the box but separated therefrom by a space 20, and the rear end of one of the walls of said guide is bent to form a ri ht angular arm 21 secured to the rear wall of the box, while the rear end of the other wall of the guide proj ects upward to ing the tickets.
The exposed side of the outer wall of the guide is provided with graduations bearing numerals, the distance between the lines of graduation being equal to the length of the tickets printed on the strip.
The height of the walls of the guide, between its curved first end 23 and its rear arm 22 isless than the width of the ticket strip to permit the latter to project above the upper edge of the guide so that it may be grasped by the hand to draw the strip along within the guide.
provide an arm 22 for sever- The utility and operation of the improvement constructed as thus described will be readily understood.
The invention is especially designed for use at places of amusement where it is desirable to deliver one or more tickets quickly,
and this may be accurately done by the employment of our improvement.
If a purchaser desires five tickets, the ticket seller grasps the strip at a point opposite the figure 5 and pulls the strip to clear the outer edge of the arm 22 when the five tickets thus drawn are severed and delivered to the buyer connected together. If less than five tickets are called for, the ticket is grasped at the point opposite the number corresponding to the number of tickets required and the strip is pulled out and the tickets severed therefrom in the manner above described.
It will be noted that the space between the numeral 1 on the guide, and the outer edge of the arm 22 is slightly longer than the other graduated spaces on the guide. This is so arranged for the reason that it is desirable to leave a small portion of the second ticket on the strip to facilitate the drawing out of the trip.
It will be apparent that by the use of the improved holder, the necessity of separately counting the tickets as they are drawn out from the roll is avoided. I
In Figs. 2 and 4 a modification is illustrated consisting of two boxes or holders placed one above the other. These boxes are similar in construction to that shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, except that the upper box 24 serves as a cover for the lower box 25 and the uide 26 of the lower box projects outward from the side thereof beyond the vertical plane of the guide 27 of the upper box 2 1. The purpose of this relative position of the two guides is to permit a ticket strip to be drawn from one guide without interfering with the other. This modified embodiment of the invention is designed for use where tickets of different price are to be sold. For
example the upper box 24 may contain a ticket roll consisting of the value of five cents, and the lower box 25 may contain tickets of the value of ten cents, and it is obvious that tickets may be served from either strip without affecting the other.
In Figs. 6 and 7 we have shown a modification ofthe indicator device adapted for use where a considerable number of tickets are likely to be called for at one time. This modification consists of a foldin attachment serving as an indicator and designed to su plercpent the indicator or graduations on t e g The reference numeral 28 designates the ticket box or holder constructed as shownin Fig. 1 and provided with the graduated guide 29. The box is supported upon a table 30 or. like support, and ivotally attached to the side of the box befow the outer ends of the guide 29 upon a pin 31 is a folding rule or gage 32 divided by numbered graduations and serving as an indicator. This folding indicator is hinged at the point 33 and is adapted to rest upon the table. The ticket strip is drawn out of the guide 29 and its outer end is brought opposite the line on the indicator which corresponds to the number of tickets required, after which the ticket strip is severed by the arm 22 as already described.
When not required foruse the folding rule or indicator may be folded and disconnected from its pivoted support 31, until again required for use.
If preferred, the position of the outer revoluble sleeve 12 may be reversed end for end so that its flange 13 will rest upon the cludes all such further modifications of the broad idea involved as may fall within the terms and scope of the following claims.
Having fully described our invention what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A ticket holder, comprising a box or casing, a reel centrally disposed .within said box, a guide of U-shape in cross section communicating at one end with an opening in the box and extending along one side of the box, said guide bearing numbered graduations and havin a projecting arm.
2. A ticket-ho der comprising a box or casing, a revoluble sleeve centrally arranged within said box, and adapted to support a rolled ticket strip, a guide communicating at one end with an opening in the box, and carrying a ticket severing projection at its opposite end, said guide bearing numbered graduations, and being of less width than the ticket'strip. 4
8. A ticket-holder comprising a box or casing, a flanged stationary sleeve secured to the bottom of the box, a revoluble flanged sleeve supported upon said stationary sleeve, a guide curved at one end, and communicating with a corner slot of the box, said guide being U-shaped in cross-section and extending parallel to one side of the box through the box thereof and terminating in a ticket severing arm, and bearing on its exposed face a series of numbered graduations, spaced to conform to the length of the tickets within the box.
4. A ticket-holder comprisin a box or casing, a revoluble reel support wit in the box to' receive a ticket strip wound thereon, a guide --of U-shape in cross-section communicating at one end with a slot in the boX through which the outer end of the ticket strip @1- tends, said guide being of less width than the ticket stripand bearing numbered graduations, the distance. being equal to the length of the tickets on the strip.
5. The combination with a ticket-holder comprising a boX, a revoluble reel therein, a ticket strip wound upon said reel, a guide to receive said strip as it is drawn from the reel and an indicator attached to one side of the box adjacent to the end of the guide from which the ticket strip issues, said indicator being provided with numbered graduations, and adapted to rest upon a table or sup ort.
6. The combination with a ticket-ho der, comprising a box and revoluble reel therein,
