COMBINED SCREEN AND WASHSTAFI'D.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.
Application filed April 17. 1967- Serial No. 368.725. 0
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA L. J ONES, citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Screen and Washstand, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to anew article of furniture comprising a combined screen, dresser and wash-stand, that is especially serviceable in dwellin s and apartments where the rooms are small and space is of prime importance and although designed essentially as a wash-stand, it has no resemblance to such when viewed from the front, but to the contrary represents an ordinary folding screen of attractive appearance, and for this reason the article is peculiarly adapted as a bed-room iece ininstances where such room is also to e used as a livin room.
The object of t e invention is to provide'a combined article of furniture of the character tion, attractive in appearance and whose parts may be readily assembled or folded for packing and shippin purposes. 4
Briefly and spec' cally stated the invention comprises a new combined article of furniture consisting of a central and outer screen sections hinged together and adapted to be folded or collapsed one upon another, the said outer sections being disposed rearwardly and maintained at an angle to each other and to the central section, preferably by means of an intermediate and a lower shelf which detachably connect said rearwardly directed screen sections, a suitable closure being provided to close the opening between said shelves and thus provide a closed compartment below the intermediate shelf, the space between the screen sections above the compartment being open.
In order that the invention may be thoroughly understood I will proceed to describe a referred embodiment thereof in connection w1th the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1, is a front elevation. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical section. Fig. 3, 1s. a rear elevation. Fig. 4, is a perspective view. Fig. 5, is a horizontal section taken on the line 55Fig. 2. Fig. 6, is a transverse section showing the article folded. Fig. 7, is
a detailed sectional view showing one manner tail perspective view partly in section of a corner construction. 7
In the embodiment of the invention as herein shown, the screen consists of three sections, namely, a central or intermediate section 1, and two outer sections 2, the latter being preferablyconnected to the opposite vertical edges of the section 1, by means of hinges 3 and 4, one of which hinges as shown at 4 is preferably of the double acting type so that the outer sections 2 of the screen may be folded upon opposite sides of the interme,
diate section 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The several screen sections may be of any preferred desi n and embellishment, but I prefer to provide the central section with a panel mirror 5, and a shelf 6, the latter being detachably connected by means of screws or the like 7. By constructing the central section with a mirror and shelf as shown and described a convenient dresser is provided. The two outer sections 2, of the screen are, .as shown, disposed angularly relative to the central section 1, and are connected and braced in position by means of shelves preferably three in number, an upper shelf 8, an intermediate shelf .9, and a lower shelf 10. These shelves are preferably detachably connected to the central .and outer screen sections so that they may be readily attached and removed when desired. A simple and convenient manner of attachin the shelves consists in providing each sh at proper points as shown, with a plurality of hooks 12, which are constructed to take into suitable eyes 13, attached to the screen sections. Obviously any other suitable attaching means may be employed for securing the shelves in position.
I prefer to inclose the space between the intermediate and lower shelves .9 and 10, to provide a closed compartment, and to this end suitable vertical and horizontal framing.
are hinged together, and as all other parts of of supporting the shelves, and Fig.8, isa ds -l uhe article are detachably connected, it will be apparent that the same may be readily taken apart and compactly folded for shipping or storing purposes and likewise the parts may be easily and quickly assembled.
The chief characteristic of the invention resides in the fact that I have provided a new article of furniture which, when viewed from the front, has every appearance of an ordinary folding screen, but which in fact is a combined screen, dresser and wash-stand,
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise details of construction as shown and described except as I may-be limited by the terms of the appended claims, neither do I wish to be understood as confining myself to any particular design of screensections as obviously these may be of any preferred design and embellished in any manner to suit the demands.
What I claim is p 1. A new combined article of furniture, comprising a central and outer screen sections hinged together and adapted to be folded or collapsed one upon another, the said outer sections being disposed rearwardly and maintained at an angle to each other and to the central section, an intermediate and a lower shelf connecting said rearwardly directed screen sections, and a closure arranged to close the opening between said shelves and thus provide a closed compartment below the intermediate shelf, the space between the screen sections above the compartment being open.
2. As a new article of furniture, a screen comprising an intermediate and outer screen sections of substantially uniform dimensions, said outer sections being disposed rearwardly at an angle to each other and to the intermediate section, upper, lower and intermediate shelves arranged between and secured to the outer sections, and doors for closing the opening between the lower and intermediate shelves to provide a compartment.
3. As a new article of furniture, an ornamental screen comprising an intermediate and outer screen sections of substantially uniform dimensions, said outer sections being disposed rearwardly at an angle to each other and to the intermediate section, a lower and an intermediate shelf connecting the outer sections, and a" closure for closing the opening between the said shelves.
4. As a new article of furniture, a screen comprising a central screen section and subeach other and to the intermediate section, a
mirror in the front face of the latter section, a shelf below said mirror, an intermediate and a lower shelf connecting said rearwardly directed screen sections, and a closure arranged to close the opening between said shelves and thus provide a closed compartment below the intermediate shelf, the space between the screen sections above the compartment being open.
6. As a new article of furniture, a combined screen and wash-stand, comprising a central and outer screen sections hinged together and adapted to be folded or collapsed one upon another, the said outer sections being directed rearwardly at an angle to each other and to the central section, upper, lower and intermediate shelves connecting the said rearwardly directed screen sections, and swinging doors arranged to close the opening between the lower and intermediate shelves and provide a closed compartment below said intermediate shelf, the space between the screen sections above said last named shelf being open.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANNA L. JONES.
