JOHN J. HENRY, OF GREENVIEW, ILLINOIS.
BARREL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 14, 1908.
Application liled December 29| 1906. Serial No. 350.086.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. HENRY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Greenview, in the county of Menard and said spring may exert its stress outwardly State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to knock-down barrels, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a barrel in which the staves and heads may be quickly disconnected and connected in order that after the contents of the barrel have been removed, the staves may be readily disconnected and packed in a small compass for return shipment.
Another object of my invention is to provide a barrel in which the staves may be quickly assembled to form the barrel body, and the heads readily placed in position by an unskilled person.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a barrel made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. Sis a horizontal section of the same.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of the invention, the numeral 1 designates the staves of my barrel, while 2 are the hoops, and 3, the heads. In appearance my barrel from the outside, is of the usual contour, having hoops at the ends and a central bulge. barrel staves near each end thereof, I employ a series of guides or keepers 4, one of said keepers being secured to the inner wall of each stave near each end thereof, `and said guides or keepers each consisting of a strip of sheet metal having a curved portion 5 and side ears or lugs 6 adapted to be secured by suitable fastenings to the inner wall of the Upon the inside of the stave. A spring wire ring 7 having a hook 8 at one end, extends through all the guides or keepers 4, said spring 7 being normally of greater diameter than the barrel in order that against the inner walls of the staves.
It is to be noted that two of the staves al a are not provided with guides or keepers 4, and the purpose of this omission is to provide means whereby the remaining staves may be connected to the spring ring 7, and staves a, a iinally placed in position to have the hoops 2 placed on the barrel, as will be understood.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a barrel made in accordance with my invention, may be quickly set up for use, and may be quickly dismantled and the parts packed within a 'comparatively small space for reshiprnent.
The keepers and the spring rings being located upon the inside of the barrel are entirely out of the way, and cannot be injuredby coming in contact with obstacles when the barrel is being rolled from place to place.
Having -thus described the invention, what I claim is; l
The herein described collapsible barrel comprising a series of staves, keepers secured to said staves at two points on their inner surfaces, a plurality of staves in which the keepers are omitted, spring wire rings extending through said keepers on the inside of the barrel, said rings each having a hook at one end, heads secured at each end of thebarrel, and hoops surrounding the outer side of the barrel for holding the heads in place.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
