To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL II AGNER, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Penns lvania, have invented certain new and usefu Improvements in Ink-Wells, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. v

This invention relates to improvements in ink wells, and the invention has for its object to provide an ink-well from which writing fluid cannot be spilled, when the well is accidentally tilted or upset.

Briefly described, my ink-well comprises a receptacle having a depending funnel therein extending in close proximity to the bottom of the receptacle. The receptacle is provided with a detachable cap carrying an auxiliary funnel. The detailed construction of my invention, together with the various advantages of such construction, will be presently described, and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the ink-well. Fig. 2 is a similar view, illustrating the same partly tilted, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the ink-well completely upset or inverted.

The ink-well comprises a receptacle 1 preferably constructed of vitreous material, as glass. Resting upon the upper edges of the receptacle 1 is a peripheral flange 2 of a depending funnel 3, which extends in close proximity to the bottom of the receptacle and has a very small opening 4, for admitting the contents of the receptacle 1 to the funnel 3. The upper exterior edges of the receptacle 1 are threaded, as at 6, to receive the depending interiorly threaded flange 7 of a cap 8, said cap being preferably constructed of metal. Centrally of the cap 8 is a depending auxiliary funnel 9, providing an annular compartment 10 between said funnel and the funnel 3, while the funnel 3 provides an annul'ar compartment 11 between said funnel and the sides of the receptacle 1.

When the ink-well is tilted or upset, as

illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the writing fluid within the funnel 3 flows into the compartment 10, while the contents of the receptacle 1 flows into the annular compartment 11, thus preventing the writing fluid from being ejected from the

funnels

3 and 9 when the ink-well is tilted or upset. The small opening 4 of the pending funnel 3 prevents a pen point from impinging the bottom of the ink-well and being broken or injured.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

An ink well comprising a receptacle having a screw-threaded portion, a depending funnel arranged in said rece tacle and having a laterally extending annular flange resting upon the edges thereof, said funnel extending in close proximity to the bottom of the receptacle and having a small contracted opening at the lower end thereof, the lower portion of said funnel being contracted and curvilinear in contour in vertical section, and a cap mounted upon said flange and provided with a depending screw threaded flange engaging the screw threads of said receptacle thereby forming a closure for the top of the receptacle and fixedly securing said funnel in position,

said cap approximately centrally thereof provided with an auxiliary depending funnel of truncated cone shape in contour.
