Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedJan. 7, 1908.
Application'filed April 3, 1906- Serial No. 309-586. RenewerlUune 5. 1907- Serial No. 377.363.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MAX BLUM and JA- COB STEIN, citizens of the United States, residing at Elizabethport, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope-Clamps; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference bein had to the accompanyin drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention'relates to a rope clamp and I one that is designed more particularly for the tightening of rope, such as pulley lines and clothes lines, and the invention is of a class that employs tapered jaws sliding in a cylindrical sleeve so that a greater strain on the This invention is desi ned to rovide an article of this kind wit shoul ers on the i i front, and to limit the movement of the gripping jaws and to form bearings for the fin ers to hold the jaws back, when it is desire to let them e sli through the aws. -A furtl ier o ject is to provide these jaws with ribs on their interior surfaces for engagement with the rope.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the device. Fig.
' 2 is ato view, and Fig. 3 is a section on line 3, 3, in *ig. 1. Fig. 4 is a face view of the inside of one of the jaws.
In the drawings, the body portion 10 has the eye 1 1 in one end for the reception of one end of a rope 12. This body portion has, also, the bulgin portions 13 ending up on the lie cylindrical part 14. Secured in the cylindrical part are the two jaw sections 15, which are formed with the shoul- (lers 16 on the small end to limit the backward movement of the jaws, and to provide finger pieces for holding them back. These jaws have the same interior diameter for their full length, but their exterior tapers, and have the enlarged end 17. It will thus be seen that a pull on the rope away from the body portion, will tend to grip the rope and secure it. To more securely hold the said rope, we prefer to rovidethe interior of the jaws with a series 0? ribs 18, of any usual construction, these jaws grip ing the end 19 of the rope and assuring no s i ping.
Between the eye 11, an the cylindrical part 14 is arranged a ring or annular portion 20 which may be integral with the body portion. The office of this ring is to guide the rope, so that when the end 19 is pulled, even although the pull is not directly in line with the axis of the jaws, then the rope will not be jammed or forced between the aws 15 at their sides. This might easily result, if the rin was absent, as the rope would act as a we geto force itself-in between the jaws, if there was-a distinct side pull on the free end 19 of the r0 e.
Having t 'us described our invention, what we claim 1s:
A device of the kind described, comprising a body-portion having bulging side pieces, an eye on one end of the body portion and a cylindrical part on the other end, the eye forming means for attachin one end of a rope, a air of tapered jaws s iding in the cylindrica part, for rasping the en of a rope, and a ring secured to the side pieces and in line with the jaws to guide the free end of the rope and prevent the entrance of the rope between the sides of the jaws.
In testimony, that we claim the fore oing, we have hereunto set our hands this 28t day of March1906.
MAX BLUM. JACOB STEIN.
