Description

E. P. CAMPBELL.
BEARING PULLER.
AFPLICATION FILED JUNE 17, 1915 v 1 1 7 1 ,590, Patented Feb. 15, 1916.
WITNESS I IN VEN TOR.
v Z'II'Zilif? (ma 125612 BY 0W V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST P. CAMPBELL, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF-ONE-HALF TO JOSEI H E. GOODMAN, OE STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
BEABING-PULLEE'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 15, 1916.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST P. CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bearing- Pullers; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in implements or tools for pulling bearings of all kinds from shafts and .particularly relates to a tool for pulling magneto bearings from their respective shafts, the object of the invention being to produce such a tool as will be adjustable to any sized bearing and which will accurately and efliciently clamp. and pull the same from the shaft in a rapid and effective matter.
A still further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceeding effec- .tive for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of the parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
On thedrawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure l is a side elevation of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on a line X-X of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the tool.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the shaft and the numeral 2 the bearing to be pulled therefrom.
My improved tool embodies primarily a threaded pin 3 provided with an operating handle or cross-head 4. The engaging member of the tool comprises a plurality of engaging jaws or finger members 5 having inwardly projecting engaging flanges6, said finger members 5 being slightly tapered and provided at their lower ends with threadedshanks 7 screw mounted upon the threaded pin 3 and held in that position by means of a collar 8 circling the said shanks 7 and secured thereto by means of screws 9 which fit into holes 10 slightly larger in diameter than the screws 9 to allow the finger members 5 to have a slight relative radial movement for the purpose of engaging bearings of different diameters. A knurled collar 11 is provided to slip over the finger members 5 and clamp the same against the bearing 2. The threaded pin 3 is then moved against the end of the shaft 1 by means of the member 4 and this action advances the tool and incidentally-the bearing to which it is attached along the shaft 1.
From the foregoing description it can readily be seen that the invention embodies a single tool having a varied range of uses for removing different sized bearings.
From the description above, it will further be seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While thisspecification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the invention, still in practice, such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
-Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A hearing puller comprising a plurality of finger members having radial movement with respect to each other, means carried by the finger members for clamping them against the bearing and a pin threaded through the finger members and arranged to be advanced against the end of the shaft to move same through the hearing as described.
2. A device of the character described comprising a threaded pin having a handle, a plurality of finger members each having a shank threaded on said pin, a collar surrounding said finger members and secured thereto by screws projecting through said collar member and into orifices in said finger members, said orifices being of greater diameter than said screws, and means moving over said finger members and adapted to hold them in fixed position with respect to each other, as described.
3. A device of. the character described comprising a threaded member having a handle, a plurality of finger members screw mounted en said threaded member, such fin- In testimony wherebf I a'fiix my signager members being slightly tapered, a. co1- ture in presence of two witnesses.
lar slidably mounted on said finger mem- V ERNEST AMPBELL hers, means binding said finger members to- 5 gether and arranged to allow said finger Witnesses:
members redial movement with respect to FLOYD M. BLANcHABns, each other, as described. VERADINE WARNER.
