Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Jan. 7, 1908.
Application filed September 20. 1906- Serial No. 335.468.
6 invented a new and useful Improvement in Shields for Enlarged Joints, etc; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to shields or protectore for use on enlarged joints, bunions, corns and the like, or in the treatment of various localized hysical conditions.
The ob]ect of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is sanltary and 16 durable, which can be readily applied and removed, which will remain in position in which it is placed, and especially one which is comfortable to the user.
The invention consists of a device constructed ashereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of one form of the device; Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views taken respectively on the lines 22 and 33, Fi 1; Fig. 4 is a 26 plan view showing a slightly different shape;
and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55, Fig. 4.
The device is made of some moisture-proof material, preferably rubber, and is so constructed as to be very yielding or soft. Its
80 body is formed wholly or in part of a comparatively highly yieldin substance 1, such as spon e or hone combe rubber. The upper and ower s also of soft rubber, but substantially non- 36 porous so as to prevent moisture, germs, and
other matter from finding lodgment in the porous spon e or honeycombed rubber in the interior. T ese outer surfaces may be made of separate sheets of thin, soft, sheet rubber,
having their edges united so as to entirely envelop the porous sponge or honeycombed rubber, or said surfaces may be rendered nonporous by pro er treatment of the surface of the sponge or oneycombed rubber itself, as
46 will be readilymnderstood.
The device is preferably of concave or cup shape, as shown, so as to fit neatly on the part to be treated, but it may if desired be at, but in any event the shape both as to according to the part of the body to whi ii it is aces 2 and 3 of the body are to be applied. The device preferably is provided with a hole or opening 6 so as not to im ose any pressure on the affected part. This ole or opening is preferably located at one side of the centerof the body so as to give a larger body portion on one or two sides of said opening. This enlarged body portion gives an opportunity for greater thickness and greater cushioning effect As shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the device is provided with a lar e and thick cushion 7' and a smaller CUSTllOIl on the opposite side at 8, while the two side portions 9 are comparatively thin and hence less yielding. The form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is intended for use where a cushion can advantageously be placed only on one side, this being indicated at 10.
The device described is sanita in that it is im ervious to germs and the like, can be readi y cleaned and is durable. The cushion or cushions contained in the same are so yielding that the device exerts no uncomfortable pressure in use, and is therefore very comfortable. The shape of the device causes it to be retained 1n place on the part to be treated, thus dispensing with adhesives or other means for securing the same in place. i
What I claim is:
1. A shield of the character specified, composed of. sponge or honeycombed rubber aving seamless non-porous outer faces and being of concave shape and provided with an opening.
2. A shield of the character specified,
having seamless non-porous top and bottom.
rubber faces, a cushion or cushions interposed between the same, said device being of concave shape with an opening therethrough.
3. A- shield of the character specified, having seamless top and bottom non-porous rubber faces and having an interposed "sponge or honeycomb'ed rubber cushion or cushions, said device being concave with an 0 ening located non-concentric and having t e thickest cushion on the side of the opening where the body portion is widest.
4. A shield of the character specified, having a body provided with an opening therethrough located at one side of the center HENRY SCHIFFHAUER have hereunto set my of the bod said bobdyt 1 beigg com ifsed of hand. s on e or one .com e ru er wit seamlgss l lon-porous faces and being thickest on JOHN SCHIFFHAUER' 5 the side of the opening where the body is Witnesses:
widest. ROBERT C. TOTTEN,
In testimony whereof, I the said JOHN JOHN F. WILL.
