FELT PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent Patented June 28, 1921.

'To all whom it may concern:
with certain foot ailments, and suitable for effective practice of modern treatment methods.
In the embodiments of my invention shown in the .drawings,

The pads embodying my invention are made of felt, or similar fibrous, homogeneous material having considerable resiliency, and each pad is made of a single piece of uniform density. Each pad preferably is ovate form in plan, and has, as shown in Fig. l, a convex crown or upper surface 11 curved smoothly in all parts and in all directions. The crown preferably rises ratherabruptly as at 12 close to the perimeter and curving rather rapidly as at 13 inwardly from the ovate perimeter 14, and the pad body is preferably tapered in section, the elevation of the pad near one end being greater than near the other. Each pad has in its under side a shallow elongated recess or pocket 15, preferably ovate or ellipsoidal V in plan and having its concaved surface curving gradually and smoothly from the perimeter. The flat area 16 of the under side of the pad, intervening between the perimeters of the recess and the crown, is preferably narrow at the sides of the pad and relatively longer near the ends of the )ad.
1 At a suitable point near the crest of the recess 15 thus provided I form a pressurerelief opening 18, cut straight through the fibrous material, and preferably having its edges sharply meeting the crown surface 11. Further I prefer that the inwardly facing portion of the opening 18 be further recessed, as at 19, to provide a tapering small recess intervening between the major recess 15 and the opening 18.
As illustrated in all of the .views it is my preference that the walls of the pad should be thicker adjacent one end of the recess 15 than the other, the difference of thickness varying to suit the demands in different pads, so that in use, localization of shoepressure through the pad on one portion of the foot may be made greater to aid in the relief of pressure on the other portions of the foot that are covered by the pad. Also, as indicated in the several figures showing typical forms, the size of the main recess 15 with respect to the outer perimeter of the pad may be varied, and other changes in proportion and specific detail may be made.
All of the curved surfaces are preferably cut surfaces, so exposing skinless or raw portions of the felt'body, for softness and for advantageous frictional qualities.
In the use of my pad for the treatment of corns, calluses and other sensitive conditions of the foot, the pad used should, of course, be adequate in size to cover substantially the whole affected area and a relatively non-sensitive portion surrounding it, and a pad of greater or less taper, and of more or less thickness will be selected as best may fit the surface to be treated. Usually it is worn next the foot, but may be placed over the stocking. The opening the shoe or stocking to hold it in position.
Where treatment of the corn or other center ofirritation with some medicament is desired, the construction having a tapering recess 19 intervening between the opening 18 and the main recess 15 is especially desirable as this space will receive a body of medicated cotton, or salve, or other material, and will tend to retain it against bodily escape through the opening 18, without,
however, causing undue thickening of the pad owing to the presence of thermedicament.
While I have herein described in some detail a particular embodiment of my invention it will be apparent that changes in the details thereof may be made without departure from the spirit of my invention and Within the scope of the appended claim.
