Description
UNITED STATES PATENTOFFIOE, e
ULARENOE II.v HOWARD ANDHARRY I/I. PFLAGER, or sT. LOUIS, MISSOURI, AssIGNORs Tol DOUBLE BODY BIOLSTER COMPANY, OF sT. `LOUIS, MISSOURI, A CORPORATION OF'NEW To Yall whom concern.: .A
Be it known thatwe', CLARENCE H. HOW- v classl of car double body-bolster whiohis composedof-cast steel integral throughout, and
,ordinarily consists of a reetangu ar-shaped frame adapted to bear againstithe underside 4is the sills, and united to `each other at their of the 4car-sills and comprising mainly, two side, and two end members, respectively arranged transversely and longitudinally .to
ends,` the side members being at a comparatively short distance a-part, a middle member spanning and united at itsends tothe' side members', and havingthe. body. center; plate on'its underside adapted' to enga ethe'Y center-plate of the truck-bolster, anl two' 'side-bearing members united at their vends to the sidemembers,`one on each siderof the middle member. By this construction, the radial movement of the truck with its wheels about the body center-plateis limited'owing tothe obstruction by the side members of the'body-bolster to the Wheels, and our-inv ention has for its Object to provide a strong,.
r1gid, and durable double body-bolster of this type in which the members -are so oonstructed. and arranged` as ,to permit of the complete revolution of the truck with its wheels and appendages about the body leenter-plate uno structed by the body-bolster.
The invention consists in features of novanying Whereon,
Figure 1, is a top plan view of our' improved double body-bolster; Fig. 2, an end elevation thereof longitudinally with the carsills; Fig.' 3', a vertical longitudinal section through the bolster on line.3,'3, in-F ig. 1, and Fig. 4, a' vertical transverse section through the bolster on line 4,4, in Fig. 1. 'Y
Like letters and numerals of reference de note like parts in all the figures.
A represents our improved car double body-bolster, which is 'of cast steel integral throughout, and consists preferably, of a rectan ular-shaped frame aving two opposite en members @which Specification of Letters Patent.

are preferably. I Sha'ped in cross section (or otherwise suitably shaped) and adapted` toJ bear against the underside of the outer carsills" l, longitudinally thereto, and two opposite side members b, preferably I-beams,v adapted to .bear against the underside of the` center andintermediate sills A2, and 3, respectively, transversely '.thereto, and spaced apart a suiicient distance to clearthe Wheels of the' truck; (not shown) inwhatever position thelatter may be radially .to the body center-plateas hereinafter morearticularly `referredto, the end-and side mem ers a and b being united to each other at the corners of the 'frame in the ordinary manner. Spanning and unitedatits ends ,to the side members `b, -midway between. the endv mem-L" -bers a, is 'a middle 'longitudinal member c Vwhich is preferably I-shaped in crosssection,v having tne body centerplate-4 on its undersidefor engaging the center-plate of the truckbolster and perforated centrally thereat for .the-king-.bolt (not shown) The middle member c extends mainly above the plane of the end and-side members a and b betweenv the center'sills 2, its upper part being preferably horizontal and curved downward therefromat the ends to unite with the side meml i bers b, While the underside vof the member 6,
between each 'side member b, and the body center-plate 4- which is located below the plane o f the end and sidemembers a andb, is
preferably concave longitudinally, and adapte ed thereat lto clear the truckwheels when moving beneath the middle member c during a complete revolutionof lthe* truck-bolster about the body center-plate 4, the apex ofl each concave portion being in the present case preferably, on a level, or thereabout, with the upper or bearing side of the end and side members a, and b as shown (or at any rother desired level). 5
Preferably beneath, and united at two opposite parts to the middle memberrc, is preferably, a clrcular ring or analogous memberA i which is referably'channel-shaped in cross `section an concentric with the body center'- plate 4, the member being adapted on its underside to form a circular bearing, in lieu of the ordinary body-bolster side-bearings, for engaging the'side-bearings of 'the' truce'- bolster. each end member a by two' referably channel-shaped members d whi are tangential `to the ring d at opposite parts thereof, and
The ring or member d is united to,
converge therefrom to their junction at a suitable distance apart with the end member a,
v the said members d and d being further reinerating as a strong and rigid brace to the frame of the bolster. Or the member d may be otherwise constructed to form a circular bearing on its underside for engaging the sidebearings of the truck-bolster, and otherwise .braced and united to the end members a and Correction in Letters Patent No. 875,818.
middle member c as found desirable in practice.
In' the above construction, by spacing the side members b Wide apart and bracing theV end members a and middle mem-ber c, intermediately to the side members I), by a suitable member havingA its sides' converging from their maximum distance apart at the middle member c'to their junction with the end members a, combined with the circular bearing forming part of this bracing member,
and with the arched-middle member c, the
structural'strength and rigidity of the body# bolster is increased and the truck. with its Wheels enabled to move radially about the body center-plate around sharpcurves, and
uponthe application M .ssouri, for an improvement in [sinn] if need be, through a complete revolution without obstruction by the side and other` members of the bolster as now occurs in the ordinary construction.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A. car-bolster'oi the character described,
consisting of two opposite end members, and
two opposite side members spaced Wide apart and united to the end members, the said members being adapted to bear at the top against the car-sills, a middle member spanning and uniting to the side members, and
having the body center-plate on its underl side, the middle member' extending partly between the center sills and having its underside, between eachside member and the said plate, concave longitudinally, a ring or analogous member united to the middle member and adapted on its underside`to form a circular bearing surface concentric with the said plate. for engaging the side-bearings of the truck, and suitable members uniting thesaid ring to the end members, substantially as descrlbed and for the purpose set forth.
