of the supporting member and screen.
MORRIS .I. ADAMS, OF PARKSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
GRATE FE NDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1907.
Application filed May 25,1906. Serial No- 318,703.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS J. ADAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parksville, in the county of Boyle and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Grate-Fender, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grate fenders and more particularly to swinging fenders the object being to provide a screen fender which is very simple and cheap in construction and one which is very effective in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide the fender with a supporting member provided with clamping means so that it can be readily attached to the frame of the ordinary grate.
Another object of my invention is to pivotally connect the fender to the supporting member so that it can be swung upwardly and locked out of the way.
\Vith these objects in view the invention consists of the novel features of construction, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fire-place and grate showing my improved fender in place. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the supporting member and screen showing the screen swung upwardly and locked. Fig. 3 is a detail view Fi 4 is a detail sectional view. Fig. 5 is a pel spective view of the supporting member.
In the drawing, A indicates the frame of an ordinary grate, B the supporting member and C the wire screen pivotally connected thereto.
The supporting member B, is formed of a plate of any suitable material having rounded apertured ends which are bent forward to form ears B. A tongue B, extends upwardly and centrally from the plate, having its end bent forward and notched forming a hook B, for the purpose described hereinafter. Projecting downwardly centrally from the plate is a tongue 13*, which is bent backwardly and upwardly adapted to clamp over the frame of the grate and be securely locked thereon by a thumb screw D, working in an opening in the tongue B The wire screen 0, is preferably formed of a curved wire frame as shown, but it is of course understood that any suitable material can be used with the same results. The central strand of wire C, of the frame does not extend up to the top strand, but is secured to the strand next to the top. A strand of wire E, is passed through the ears B, having its ends bent around the upper strand of the wire frame, forming a hinge so that the frame can be swung upwardly until the wire C, is brought into engagement with I the hook B which will securely hold the same raised.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a fender with a very novel supporting means which can be readily attached to a frame of a grate, and one which is provided with very novel means of holding the fender raised.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with the frame of a grate, of a supporting plate having an inwardly and upwardly projecting clamping member for embracing said frame, a tongue projecting upwardly from said plate and provided with an outwardly projecting notched end, and a wire screen pivotally connected to said plate, as set forth.
2. The combinationwith the frame of a grate, of a plate having apertured ears, a tongue extending downwardly from said plate, bent backwardly and upwardly, a second tongue projecting upwardly from said plate and provided with a hook and an opening, a thumb-screw working in the opening in said upwardly projecting tongue and adapted to engage said frame, a strand of wire mounted in the apertured ears of the plate, and a wire frame carried by said wire for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with the frame of a grate, of a plate having apertured ears at each end, of an apertured tongue projecting upwardly from said plate and provided with a hook at wire frame pivotally connected to said wire, its e fnd, a Cithumbcisorew worlain 1 in tlcile openfor the purpose described.
ing orme in sai tongue an a apte to look said plate to said frame, a tongue extending MORRIS ADAMS downwardly from said plate bent baok- \Vitnesses:
wardly and upwardly to form a clamping HENRY JACKSON,
member, a wire mounted in said ears and a J. WV. EDWARDS.
