) O bject, for instance, Vmuch of the timber .usedin coal and other mines for supporting the roof thereof, in the usual manner, is broken very often by the expansion of the .roof measures; this device or apparatus will allow'the roof'to expand, Without breaking the supporting device, as there will be .p ansion of the rocks. In ordinary practice,
i rthe standards or posts divergefrom 'each `other, at the bottom thereof, and their upper ends' receive a cross bar this construction o f supportfh'as been found to be impraeticable for supporting the roof measures. .1 The invention aims, by diver ing the standards or posts at their upper ends, as a further4 enough give, stretch or elasticity, in either vrods .or Wirerope, so. as to allow for' full'ex# object, to provide means by which the tie rod or stretcher, disposed lat the ntop of ythe` sufficient 'amount of pressure 'against the standards or posts, are drawn taut, by a lowerportions ofthe standards'or-pos'ts, the

gitudinally therethrough, illustrating the uprigh-ts, ,standards or posts in elevation, as Well as illustrating the timbers, lagging or -forepoli'ng, for sup )orting the roof of the room. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one end of one of the tie rods. Figs. 4, '5 and 6 are plan views ol dillerent forms of tie rods, uponwhich the lagging or forepoling is disposed.
Like reference characters are utilized for indicating corresponding features and' elements throughout the several views of the accompanying drawings.
In regard to the accompanying'drawings, wherein similar reference characters-indicate corres onding lparts in the several illustrations, liy figures, 1 designates a room or heading which is disp s e dY substantially at right angles to the mine shaft, as clearly shown. in
Figs. l and 2; positioned within this room or` headin and adjacent to the longitudinal side wa ls, and substantially from two to l'our feet apart, are standards or posts 2, which diverge outwardly from one another, at their upper portions, the purpose of which. is here-v inlo'efore set forth.v l`he upper ends oi these standards or posts are beveled, as at 3, which beveled portions engage themeinhers 4, which are also inclined so to correspond with the bevel of the standards, and which members 4 are 'forced slightly inward, or embedded in the corner of the room, which is formed by the roof 0l the room and the side walls thereof, so that when the said standards or posts are placed under the saine and forced outwardly at their lower portions, a wedging action is provided, and together with the tie rods or stretchers, a very ellicient support is provided, comprising strength and durability.
Spanning the room, heading or mine, and adjacent to its rootl are tie rods or strctchers 5, which are disposed transversely thereof, and'iarfe'cnnected to the standards or posts, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. These tie rods or stretchers are provided with loops 6 at each end thereof, and which engage the circumference of the standards or osts, adjacent their up )er ends, as will be cllfarly evident. To hol the tie rods or stretcher-s in close proximity to the roof, and to prevent the same, to a certain extent, from sli pping, wed es 7 are provided which are in serted wit in the loops and yadjacent the circumference of the standards or posts, Vas clearly shown in Fig. l; these wedges are held in their places by friction, asa rule, but it desired, a spike or other means 8 :may be driveninto the standards or posts, and beneath the wedge, so Aas to prevent downward displacement thereof, as will be clearly evident.
The tie rods or stretchers, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, su ort timbers, lagging or fore poling 9, W uch in turn supports the rool" measures, as will be clearly manifest. The
marea drawings illustrate several different forms of tie rods or stretchers; in Fig. li, the aplicant has illustrated a cahle bent upon itself, so as to forni loops 10 and 10, and which are held in the form of loops by two different 'forms of devices 11 and 12, the device 11 is merely an elliptical shaped ring which is'slippcd upon the cable, before the loop 10a is formed. rlhe body portion 13 an the end portions 14 ci the cable are securely held together and parallel with one another, hy .means of sta les 15, which. forms the device 12; the ends o these staples 15 are provided with registering apertures '16, through which bolts 17 are inserted, and to ythe threaded ends of which nuts 18 are applied,` so as to bind the portions 13 and lll together.
i ln Fig. 5 the tie rod is somewhat difierentl y formed, as shown; the loops are formed by bending the rod vupon itself, and the free ends of said rod are coiled about the body portion ot' the rod, as at il), andv the extreme ends, as at 20, are vformed into hooks which are engaged hy an elliptical shaped ring 2i. ln this Aform ol" tie rod, the same. is made of solid material. :in Fig. 6, the tie rod is sin1ilar to that shown in Fig. 5, with the exception/that the tree end portions merely coiled about the body portion. oi the i shown at 22, thus leaving a single thi` olt rod between the end portions.
`From the foregoing, the essential features, elements and the operation of the device, together with the simplicitj.r thereei, will be clearly apparent. .l v
Having thus l'ully described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful by the protection of Letters Patent, is',-- u
1. ln a rootl support for mines, a plurality ol` standards arranged in opposite rows, tiinber-supporting means connecting opposite stamlards, and wed fes to prevent downward displacement of sai( means.
