GALLERY-FRAME FOR MINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1912.
Application filed February 15, 1910. Serial No. 544,024.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM BINDER, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Alt-enessen, near Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gallery-Frames for Mines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gallery frames for mines and has for its primary object to provide an improved holder for holding the props of the head rails together in such a way that the prop will be permitted to give without breaking when subjected to too great a pressure, and in such a manner that a new prop may be substituted for the old and placed in a new posit-ion relative to the head rail, if desired. To this end I have provided a holder comprising a shoe adapted to be yieldably slidably secured to the head rail and provided with cheeks for receiving the prop.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a head rail and prop of a gallery frame for mines showing the improved holder applied thereto, the walls and ceiling of the mine being indicated in transverse section, Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional view taken transversely to the head rail and showing the holder partly in elevation and partly in section, Fig. 3 is a top view of the holder detached, and Fig. 4 is a front elevation showing the holder adapted to the head rail by a different method from that of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing. 1
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, the head rail or supported by the prop b is shown applied in the gallery of a mine. The holder is provided with cheeks c forming a rounded vertical recess for receiving the outer face of the upper end of the prop I) while the upper part of the holder is bent at right angles to the lower part and is provided. with a pair of bent-over inwardly projecting flanges e and f adapted to clasp over the foot 9 of the head rail (1. The holder and the head rail may be held in the relative position shown by means of setscrews h and z' as shown in Figs. 1 to 3, or by means of wedges is driven between the foot 9 and the holder as shown in Fig. 4;. When either the set-screws or the wedges are used they may be driven in sutficiently tight to hold the prop in the desired position but not so tight as to prevent an inward movement of the holder and the prop, should the pressure on the prop become too great. If the connection between the holder and the head rail were absolutely rigid, eX- cessive pressure on the side walls of the gallery would cause a breakage of the props.
In cases when it is necessary to substitute a new prop, it is possible to place the new prop in a different position from the old, as for instance, when the wall of the gallery has moved inwardly, it is not necessary to place the new prop so near the end of the head rail.
I claim as my invention:
In a gallery frame, the combination of a prop, a head-rail having a wide flat-bottomed base, a holder comprising curved downwardly extending cheeks embracing the prop, a flat bent-over upper part, and bent'over flanges projecting inwardly from the sides of the flat upper part over the base of the rail, and set-screws in said bent-over {)langes for attaching said flanges to said ase.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
