UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
I-IENRI MARIE PHILIPPE OATOIRE AND JOSEPH AUGUSTIN MARIE MARRET, OF PARIS,
FRANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed May 2-1906. Serial No- 314,789.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRI MARIE PHILIPPE CATOIRE, a Russian subject, and JOSEPH AUeUsTIN MARIE IVIARRET, a citizen of the French Republic, both of 10 and 12 Rue des Ardennes, in the city of Paris, Republic of France, manufacturers of pasteboard arti cles, have invented an Apparatus for the Manufacture of Pasteboard Boxes by Punching, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Up to the present the manufacture of pasteboard boxes in one or several pieces has been effected by means of a metal disk divided into a certain number of sectors which, under pressure of a wedge placed in the ,center of the disk, are forced into the body or into the cover of the box so as to form their circular rims and also the ledge which receives the cover. This process is not only very slow but it has also the disadvantage of leaving marks on the constitutive parts of the box, the pasteboard not being pushed into the intervals formed by the separation of the sectors.
By our invention we form the circular rims of the box and also the ledge which receives the cover without'leaving any mark on the body of the box or on the cover.
The invention is essentially characterized by the employment of a mold made in a single piece, so that the box will have no creases or trace of manufacture.
The invention also consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing shows an apparatus by which the present invention may be carried out.
Figure 1 is a box made by the present mode of manufacture. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the metal plate on which is fixed the mandrel carrying an india rubber disk. Fig. 3 is a corresponding plan. Fig. 4 is a section of the mold showing the profile of the box to be stamped. Fig. 5 is a corresponding plan. Fig. 6 represents the mandrel which compresses the india rubber disk. Fig. 7 shows in section the pasteboard capsule forming the body or the cover of the box. Fig. 8 shows the diflerent parts of the apparatus before the compression has begun. Fig. 9 shows the same apparatus when the india rubber disk has been compressed and the box stamped.
As may be seen in the drawing this apparatus is composed of an iron plate a on which is fixed a metallic mandrel b of proper height. This mandrel b carries on its upper end a disk 0 composed of india rubber or any other compressible matter.
A hollow metal mold d presenting on its inner part the exact profile of the box to be made may be fixed on the plate a by means of two lugs 6 cast on the mold and arranged so as to engage two lips f fixed on the plate a.
Another mandrel g, the lower part of which may be flat, concave or convex according to the kind of box to be made, can enter the hollow mold (i, so as to compress, by means of power brought to bear on the upper part of this mandrel, the india rubber disk 0.
Letters, drawings, monograms, etc. may be engraved on the lower end of the mandrel g. I
The diameter of the mandrel 9 should be equal to the diameter of the rims of the body or the cover of the box.
The following is the process of stamping with the apparatus arranged as described.
The two parts of the box having been previously made in the form of capsules h by an ordinary punching machine one of those capsules, for instance the one intended to form the body of the box, is placed on the india rubber disk 0 as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawing. The mold d which is provided with banks or shoulders for the purpose of forming the lower rim 4) and the ledge of the box is then placed on the capsule h and secured to the plate a by means of lugs e which fit under the lips f. The mandrel g is then inserted into the upper part of the hollow mold d and, by means of pressure brought to bear on said mandrel, the india rubber disk 0 is compressed. In expanding the india rubber' ushes the pasteboard in all directions and orces the capsule h to assume the exact form of the mold d. The cover of the box is made in the same way, the shape of the mold being, however, changed so as to form only the upper rim z" of the cover.
From what has been said it may be seen that the apparatus permits of stamping out pasteboard boxes without making any marks upon them.
This apparatus also permits of producing in rilievo, either on the bottom or on the cover of the box, letters, monograms, drawings, etc.
The expansion of the india rubber forces the pasteboard into all the parts of the mold, Which is not done by any other process employed up to the present, all of them leaving marks on the pasteboard, caused by the spreading out of the sectors, as has already been said.
Naturally the capsules it should contain the quantity of pasteboard necessary to allow of the formation of the rims i and 'i and the ledge of the box.
The mandrel 9 may be mounted on any machine capable of producing the pressure necessary for the compression of the india rubber disk 0.
The above arrangements are described only as an example; the forms, dimensions and details may be varied according to circumstances Without modifying the principle of the invention.
Claims.
1. An apparatus for forming pasteboard boxes, consisting of a base, a mandrel on the base, a disk of compressible material on the mandrel, a mold formed of a single piece and removably secured to the base With the mandrel projecting into the same, the face of the mold being of the contour of the box to be formed, and a second mandrel adapted to enter the mold and compress the disk on the first named mandrel.
2. An apparatus for forming pasteboard boxes, comprising a mold formed of a single piece and having the contour of the box to be formed, an elastic mandrel projecting into one end of the mold, and a rigid mandrel adapted to enter the other end of the mold.
3. In an apparatus for forming pasteboard boxes, a base provided with lips, a mandrel carried by the base, and a mold on the base and into Which projects the mandrel, said mold being provided With lugs for engaging the lips of the base to secure the mold thereto.
The foregoing specification of our process of manufacture of pasteboard boxes by punching signed by us this 20th day of April, 1906.
