UNITED STATES PATENT oEEroE.
WARREN H. TAYLOR, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TOv THEYALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
CYLINDER-LOCK.
Specification of lLetters Patent. Application filed October 1. 1907. Serial No. 395.434.
Patented. Dec. 24, 1907.
. To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN H. TAYLOR, of Stamford, in the county of Fairield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cylinder'- Locks and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as Will enable ot ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to \an improvement in cylinder locks of the pin tumbler type, the object being to provide means for preventing the destruction of the pins and drivers by a polling tool entered through the face of the oc y With this end in view my invention consists in the parts and combinations of parts as will be more fullyfexplained and pomted In the accompanying drawing-Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a pin tumbler lock showing my improvement in dotted lines, and Fig. 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section of same.
It is well known that the pins of a pin tumbler lock may be destroyed by drilling a hole through the top of the plug and adjacent part of the cylinder, in the plane of the pins,
thus leaving the plug free to be turned in a direction to unlock the lock.
To prevent the possibility of access to the pins-bymeans of a boring tool, I provide the cylinder 1 of the lock with an armor consist- 85 ing of ahardened steel pin or plate 2 extend- `ing preferably from the to of the cylinder'at the top-of the plug 4, and intermediate the pin tumblers and escutcheon. I also provide the plug 4 with a similar'armor 5 ex- 40 tending throughout the diameter of the lug, in the plane4 olfe the key way, the armor eing vslotted for the passage of the key. The armors 2 and 5 Which are preferably in the form of pins or plates, are secured in place in j the cylinder and plug respectively, in line with the tumbler pins and drivers 6 and 7, and absolutely prevent the possibility of destruction of all the tumbler pins by boring through the front. T his armorI need only be wide enough to revent a tool entered from the front plate, om engaging and destroying all of the tumbler pins, hence a borin tool entered at the side of the hardened stee pins or plate could not be .manipulated to reach all the pins.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement4 of parts shown and described without departin(T from the spirit and scope of my invention Iience I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction shown and'described, but,
Y Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. As a new article of manufacture, a pin tumbler lock havin a protecting armor' located within the cy inder in advance of the pins. A
2. As a new article of manufacture, a pin tumblerlock having a rotecting armor located within the cylin erand plug in advance of the pin. I
8. As a new yarticle of manufacture, a pin tumbler look havinga rotecting armor located within the cylin er, and a protecting armor located within the plug, the armor in the plug being slotted for the passage of the key, the armors in the c linder and lug be. ing located in advance of7 the pin tum 1ers. 80
n testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. WARREN H. TAYLOR.
