Description

www4-alg? EDGAR WAKEMAN, OF BROOKLYN, CALIFORNIA.
A Letters Patent No. 87,449, dated Ma'rch 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOAT-DETACHING-- APPARATUS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and makingv part c! the sans.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, EDGAR WAKEMAN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Alameda, and State of California, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Boat and Davit-Tackle; and I do hereby declare that the following ,is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of' a boat, to which my im provement has been attached, partly in section, through the line :c x, g. 2.
Figure 2 is a top view of the same, partly in section, to show the construction. y
Similar letters'of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its lobject to improve the construction of my improved boat and davit-tackle, patented April 2, 1867, and numbered 63,585, so as to make it stronger and more convenient, reliable, and effective.
A is the boat, to each of the end-posts of which is secured a strap, B, having a recess, with an inclined or bevelled shoulder formed in its lower part,l as shown in iig. l: i v
C is a bar, or link, permanently attached to the lower block of the lowering and hoisting-tackle.
Upon the lower end of the bar, or link C, is formed a head, with an inclined or bevelled shoulder, as shown in lig. 1, said head fitting accurately into the recess in l the strapB.
The outer lower edge of the head of the bar C is bevelled olf, to correspond with the inclined recess in the bottom plate of the'box D, as lshown in fig.,1, so that as the bar, or link O, is pushed down into place, the inclined parts of the head of the bar C may unavoidably bring Vsaid bar into proper position to be clamped by the cam of the lever D is a box, enclosing the operating-parts of the, device, so as to protect them from injury or obstruction, and give them a stronger support, said box being securely attached to the ame-work of the boat.
In the part of the box D, in front of and adjacent to Vthe recessedstiap B, is formed a box-spout, or recess,
F, to receive the bar, or link C, and guide'itl into its place, and, at the same time, receive and support the cam of the lever E, said box or recess F being formed solidly upon or securely attached to the box D.
E is the operating or cam-lever, which is pivoted to and within the box D.
The head, or part of the lever E within the box D, is made broad and solid, and with a wedge-shaped cam or hook upon its forward part, which enters a slot in the side of the box F, and forces and holds the bar, or link C, firmly and securely against the-strap B, so that the weight of the boat and its load may be sustained by the shoulders of the said strap and bar, as sliown in iig. l.
' The handle of the level' E is made detachable, so that when not required for use, it may be detached and laid v aside out of the way. Upon one side of the lever E, within the boxD, is formed an arm, e', to the outer end of which is attached .the end of the rod G, which vruns longitudinally along the boa't, in suitable guide and supporting-brackets, and its other end is attached to the arm eof the lever E, at the other end ofthe boat.
The rod Gr is made in two pieces, the contiguous ends of which have. screw-threads eut upon them, and are connected by the right and left-hand nut H, so that the length of the said rod may be adjusted as required for the proper operation of' the device.
The right-and-left nut H may serve as a handle, or it maybe provided with a detachable handle, for operating the apparatus, should the handle of the lever E be accidentally broken, or should circumstances prevent access to said lever E.
The rod G enables the devices at both ends of the boat to be operated at the same time, to attach and detach the boat, so that a handle will be required for the lever E only in one end'of the boat,` and especially so that it will be impossible to detach the two ends ofthe boat otherwise than at the same time.
.A Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l The slotted box-spout F, box D, and cam-lever E, having the arm e', for the attachment of the rod G, with the recessed strap B, and headed bar C, all arranged and operating as described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 27 th day of April, 1868.
Witnesses: E. WAKEMAN.
