Be it known that we, GEORGE N. BYL and JOSEPH KOEHLER, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Label-Pasters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a machine for depositing labels upon a gummed surface to coat their under faces with an adhesive material, and to so construct the device that the labels will be convexed or bellied at their gum-receiving surfaces causing them when applied to such surfaces to engage at their central portions only, thereby preventing the mass of labels becoming glued together at their edges.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide a device of the character described so constructed that a number of bunches can be accommodated in one machine, and a number of labels deposited at one operation of the machine.
A further purpose of the invention is to construct a label pasting device in a simple and economic manner, and so that the label can be quicklyand conveniently placed in position and will automatically leave the machine, a single label from each bunch of labels at each operation of the machine, and whereby the several bunches of labels may be adjusted relatively to the body of the device and secured in adjusted position.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate correspondingp arts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in reversed position, an end portion being in section; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the device; Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a-longitudinal section taken substantially on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
A represents the main frame of the machine. This frame consists of parallel side bars 10 which are in the nature of channel irons, and of bars 11 and 11 In connection with the said main frame A, we employ what may be termed a feeding frame B, but independent of the said feeding frame and connected with the main frame A, bails 12 are employed secured in offsets 12 from the outer side faces of the side members of the main frame A. These bails diverge at their horizontal portions and at said portions are provided with handles 13, preferably revo lubly mounted on the said bails.
With reference to the feeding frame B, it consists of a bar 14 adapted to loosely fit within the main frame A, and to have vertical movement within such frame. The said bar 14 of the feeding frame B is provided with a longitudinal central opening 15 that extends practically from end to end and at one end portion of the said bar 14, an enlargement 16 is produced, preferably of circular form, connected with the aforesaid slot 15, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Furthermore the bar 14 of the feeding frame B is provided at each end with a member 17 that extends upward from the said bar and likewise downward therefrom, as is shown particularly in Fig. 1, and each end member 17 for the feeding frame B is provided in its outer face with a recess 18 vertically formed, and these recesses 18 receive screws 19 that are passed through the end members 11 and 11 of the main frame A, as is shown in Fig. 1, so as to guide the feeding frame B in its vertical movement. The feeding frame B is held in its upper position, that is, in a position to receive the labels, as will be hereinafter described, by means of stirrups that are pivoted to the lower end portions of the main frame A, and when the feeding frame B is elevated, these stirrups engage with the downwardly extending portions of the end members 17 of the feeding frame, as is shown in Fig. 1, but when the device is used the stirrups 20 are disengaged from the end members of thesaid feeding frame permitting it to have free movement in the main frame A.
The feeding frame B is adapted to carry any desired number of partitions O, adjustable to and from each other. Each of said partitions O is provided with a head member 21 extending from end to end, and likewise extending beyond the sides of the partitions with more or less of a convexity at their inner faces, so that the heads 21 of the par titions O are formed with curved flanges ex tending beyond the sides of the partitions, as is illustrated in Fig. 4, and that portion 22 of the partitions adjacent to the heads 21 is more or less inclined from the heads, and
said portions 22 of said partitions are thicker than the intermediate portions 23, as is also shown in Fig. 4.
The labels E in the form of a package are loosely placed between opposing partitions C, and when the o posing partitions are properly drawn toget er, the outer faces of the labels E of a bunch are rendered con vexed or are bellied, as is shown particularly in Fig. 4, thus when the labels are brought in engagement with a gummed surface they contact therewith at their central portions only, as is shown also in Fig. 4, and further,
in the process of depositing the labels on the said gummed surfaces, when the device is lifted from said surfaces the outermost label of each bunch will adhere to the gummed surfaces, and naturally and gradually the surfaces of the labels at each side of their central portion or point of initial contact will be drawn down to be also engaged by the said gummed surfaces. Thus it will be observed that there is no possibility of the labels in the bunches carried by the device becoming cemented or gummed together at their edges.
In the further construction of each partition C, transverse base members 24 are made, preferably integral with the under edges of the said partitions, and a screw 25 is also formed integral with each of the said base members 24, the screws 25 bein adapted to receive suitable nuts 26. WZIIGII the partitions are placed in position in the machine their screws 25 are entered at the enlargement 16 and the said partitions are then turned so that their base members 24 will be within the slot 15 of the feeding frame B, as is illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, and the screws 25 of the partitions will extend down through the said slot 15 and after the partitions have been adjusted relatively to each other, the nuts 26 carried by the screws 25 are tightened up against the lower edges of the slotted portion 15 of the said feeding frame, which slotted portion of the feeding frame is provided with a clownwardly extending longitudinal marginal flange 14*, as is illustrated in Fig. 3.
Each partition C is passed through a tray D. The partitions C occupy a transverse position relatively to the feeding frame B and are located within the main frame A. Each tray D occupies a transverse position relatively to the upper face of the main frame A and extends beyond the side members 10 and 10 of said main frame, as is best shown in Fig. 2. Each tray D is provided with a side upwardly extending flange 27 integral with its body 28, and each tray D is also provided with an opening 29, preferably centrally located,which admits of the passage of a partition, but the trays are prevented from slipping from the partitions by means of their flanged head portions 21, and each tray has free vertical movement relatively to the partition C passed through it. The bunches of labels E located between adjoining partitions C engage with the opposing flanges 27 located between opposing partitions 0 and belonging to the said trays; thus these flanges 27 engaging with the inner faces of the different bunches of labels E, one flange at each side of its center, tend to force the labels in engagement with the flanged head portions 21 of the partitions and impart thereto the curvature heretofore referred to, and as is illustrated in Fig. 4, such curvature being produced when the nuts 26 belonging to the partitions are properly tightened, and the feed bar B is pressed downward.
We desire it to be understood that the inner faces of the upwardly extending end members 17 of the feeding frame B may be shaped correspondingly to the shape of the side faces of the partitions C, and in order that the bunches of labels E may be placed close together from end to end of the device, at one end, the right-hand end, for example, a cross bar 30 is located, having an upwardly extending flange 31 at its inner side portion, and this cross bar 30 which is a fixture, tends to assist in the curving of a bundle of labels E in the same manner as would a flange 27 of a tray D.
In operation, after the labels have been placed in position in the machine, the bottom side of the machine being then turned uppermost, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and it is desired to place the labels on a gummed surface, the machine is inverted, occupying the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and at each time the machine is forced downward bringing the outermost labels in engagement with a gummed surface, the labels so engaged will leave their positions between the partitions C and as the labels are removed from the various bunches at various operations of the machine, the flanges of the trays D always remain in engagement with the innermost labels.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a label paster, a carrier, partitions adjustable upon the carrier adapted to receive bunches of labels between them, and means for arching the labels of the bunches and for removably maintaining them in such position.
2. In a label paster, the combination with a carrier having a movable section, partitions adjustably supported by the said movable section of the'carrier, said partitions being provided with flanged heads and adapted to old bunches of labels between them in engagement with the said heads, means for arching the bunches of labels, which means engage with the under faces of the bunches of labels and force the uppermost labels in engagement with the heads of the partitions, and devices for securing the partitions in adjustment relatively to the said movable section.
3. In a label paster, a main frame, handles therefor, a feeding frame movable in the main frame, partitions adjustable on the feeding frame having flanged heads and adapted to hold labels between them, means for adjusting the partitions and preventing them from turning, and devices loosely mounted on the partitions that engage the under faces of the labels and force the outermost against the heads of the partitions arching the bunches of labels.
4. In a label paster, a main frame, handles therefor, a feeding frame movable in the main frame, partitions adjustable on the feeding frame having flanged heads and adapted to hold labels between them, means for adjusting the partitions and preventing them from turning, and devices loosely mounted on the partitions that engage the under faces of the labels and force the outermost against the heads of the partitions arching the bunches of labels, and means for holding the feeding frame and parts carried thereby in an upper position.
5. In a label pasting machine, a fixed element, a movable element, a movable partition adjustably carried by the movable element, the said partition being provided with flanged head sections, and means carried by the two elements, and loosely mounted with reference to the partitions for assisting the partitions in curving material placed between them.
