OTTO K. ZWNGENBERGER, OF'NEW YORK, N. Y.
Gas-PRODUCER.
Specification of Letters Yatent. Application sied January 7,1907. sain no. 351.250.
@Patented Dec, 17, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'rro KONRAD ZwrN- GENBERGER, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, residing in New York, borough 'of lvlanhattan,v county and State of New York,
for'burning 'fuels and especially fuels `of lessv valu'e, such as bituminous coal, lignite, peat and the like, for the production of gas for powerV heating and illuminating purposes, ee from tarryand other'substances`, by which the value of the gas is'diminished and for this purpose the invention consists of'a gas-producerembod 'ng the novel features lllwill be fully described hereinafter andl finally' pointed out in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved gas- producerl Qn line 1, 1, Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2, 2, Fig. 1. f i
Similar v letters responding parts.` i
Referring to the drawings, a, `is the gasproducer, which is of rectangular or other shape and thewalls of which are made of nre-'bricks in the'- usual manner. At fthe 'of reference indicate corupper end of the producer is a hopper b with za bell t1 that closes the contracted end of the 2neck of the hopper, through which the fuel, I
which is to bejchangedinto'gas for power,
heating and illuminating purposes, 1s sup-v plied from time-to. time so as Vto keep the gasproducer in continuous'operation.' ;The-gen eral process of combustion'of the fuel takes place under the well lm own fconditionspref vailing in most oftheknown gas-producers.
The gas-prduCer-is providedwithinfi'ts combustion-chamber with atransverse partition d which terminates at some distance below the top. This artitio'n d is diminished in thicknessat t e middle portion d1, and provided. in its. upper-thicker portionl With transverse channels d2 inthe u per larger part of the partition d. An inc ed stepshaped grate g is arranged at one -side of the partition d, to which air may be supplied under pressure by means of a sup ly-pipe h, the air passing to the fuel throng the stepshaped grate g after the fuel is ignited: At
the opposite side of the partition d is arranged a horizontal grate .g2 with a fire-bridge g1. Air'funder pressure is admitted to the space beneath the grate g2 througha pipe g3. An outlet-pipe h1 is arranged at the opposite side of the gas-produceradjacent to the second lgrate 'g2 so as to permit the passage of the gases to the point of use. l.The outlet-pipe h1 communicates with a laterally-extending ,outlet-passage h2 which leads through the wall of the combustion-chamber immediately grate g2. ln-the lower part of the gasfproducer, below bothgratesfg, g2, are arranged pans p for holding water which is to be evaporated and carried'by the entering current of air through the glowing fuel, above the of the partition,'to the outlet-pipe.
All the gases and tarry substancesgenerated by the burning fuel, and the steam generated from the vwater below the step-shaped grate g, pass over the partition-wall d and through the channels d2 m the same, into the chamber at the opposite side ofthe partition,` where the fuel is dried and carbonized by the high temperature in the chamber. gases, the tarry substances and the steam pass through the high column of glowing fuel, so that the tarry substances are decomposed and burned while the steam acts on the glowing carbon. The heat generated in the chambers at both sides of the'partition by the combustion of the fuel over thel rates g and g2, the glowing body of coked fuel, re-
to the place offuse. Theire-bridge on t e horizontal grate serves for lengthening the passage of the gases throughA the glowing 1 coke so as to decompose the tarry-substances and generateby the action of the steam carbon monoxid andhydrogen.
The partition d with its diminished middle portion pand its transverse channels in the 4upper and larger part of the partition facili'- tates the sliding of the fuel along the middle portion, while the transverse channels per-l mit the passage of the hot gases of combustionthrodghthe partition as well as over the up er end of the same. he gas-producer can be operatedas required, eithersunder high or low pressure.l
adjacent and slightly above the horizontal' step-shaped grate, over the partition d, and through the channels d2 to the opposite side ducesthe carbon dioxid to carbon monoXid, which isl conducted through the outlet-pi e` The' The advantages of the gas-producer are o fwn theu nlceesed yell of useful gasesend the better queity of the same owng to the decomposition of the terry substances.
Having thus described my invention, Gleim es new desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A gas-producer having an upright partition in the eolnbuston-ehemberthereof, atv
Ming-grate et one side of seid partition, a grate n f" tue opposite ende of sand partltlon, an outlet adjacent Seid second grate, and a firebridge on etter which lengthens the paseee to sein outet.
tion extending upwardly from the bottom thereof, a grate at each side of seid `gerttion', an outlet-'passage leading lateraly om said chamber adjacent and sghty above one of said grates, and a re-bidge sup orted on said last-named grate at the Inidd e portion thereof. 'l
In testimony, that daim the foregoing as my invention, l have eignen my Ila-mein 'presence ofltwo subsorbng witnesses.
yoTTo K. ZWMGENBERGER.
