To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaporizers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to Vaporizers used in connection with hot water; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the vaporizer. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the vaporizer.
A is an outer vessel or kettle preferably provided with a handle a upon one side.
B is an annular flange or ring provided with perforations b and arranged at the top of the vessel A and projecting inwardly over its water space.
C is a commingling chamber having a closed top 0. The bottom of the commingling-chamber is open and the bottom edge of the eommingling-cl amber is provided with a series of perforations (Z.
D is a supporting flange or projection at the top of the commingling-chamber. The commingling-chamber is slidable vertically in the upper part of the kettle, and its flange or projection D rests upon the ring B so that the bottom edge of the commingling-chamber is supported at a little distance above the bottom of the kettle.
E is an outlet pipefor vapor which projects upwardly from the top of the comminglingchamber and which is provided with a tapering end portion.
F is the vapor pipe which is preferably curved and which is provided with a tapering portion 7 at its lower end which slips over the tapering portion of the outlet pipe E so as to form a tight slip joint.
G is a nozzle of non heat-conducting material, such as wood, secured to the upper end of the vapor pipe.
A volatile medicament, such as the tincture of benzoin, is placed in the bottom of the kettle, and boiling water is poured over it in a quantity suflicient to about half fill the kettle. The commingling-chamber is then placed in position in the kettle, as shown, and the medicated vapor is drawn into the mouth of the patient through the nozzle or mouthpiece. The pressure inside the comminglingchamber being lessened by the partial withdrawal of air and vapor therefrom, the pressure of the atmosphere in the vessel A outside the chamber C forces the liquid upward in the chamber C until the level of the liquid outside the chamber C is lowered to the holes d. Theair is drawn downward through the holes I) and then passes through the holes d in the commingling-chamber and bubbles upward through its liquid contents. The medicated air and vapor is drawn into the lungs and exhaled through the nostrils if desired. The application of moist medicated air and vapor in this manner is very advantageous, and it is not necessary to apply external heat to the kettle in order to vaporize its contents.
What I claim is:
1. In a vaporizer, the combination, with an outer vessel for holding hot water and a medicament, said vessel being provided at its top portion with an inwardly-projecting perforated ring, of a commingling-chamber slidable in the said ring and provided at its upper part with a projection which rests on the said ring, said commingling-chamber being also provided with air inlet-holes arranged below the normal level of the liquid in the saidouter vessel, and an outlet pipe connected to the top of the said comminglingchamber.
In a vaporizer, the combination, with an outer vessel for holding a mixture of hot water and medicament, said vessel being provided at its upper part with an inwardly projecting support, of a cylindrical commingling-chamber open at its bottom and provided with holes adjacent to its bottom edge, said chamber being slidable within the said outer vessel and provided at its u per part with a projection which rests on t e said support, and an outlet pipe for medicated vapor connected to the said commingling-chamber.
