To (all 11:71 0711, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID L. SPRAGUE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clearlake, in the county of Cerro Gordo and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains' to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an inhaler for use in treatment of diseases of the respiratoryorgans; and its object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character for heating and drying air prior to the inhalation thereof.
The invention consists of a heater, preferably in the form of a lamp, said heater having a chimney extending therefrom and supporting a hood in which is located an air-receptacle provided with an inlet and an outlet at opposite ends thereof. The inlet may be connected to a suitable air-forcing device and may also be arranged to receive medicated air from any suitable source.
The invention also consists in the further novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved inhaler, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section therethrough.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a lamp having a supporting-collar 2 adjacent its burner 3, and arranged on this collar is a preferably cylindrical chimney formed of metal or other suitable material and having suitable air-inlets 5 adjacent the lower end thereof. An annular flange 6 is provided at the upper end of the chimney and supports legs 7, which extend downward from a frusto-conical hood 8, which is open. at both ends. This hood is adapted to receive a preferably cylindrical air-receiver 9, which projects downward into the chimney and has an inlet-tube 10 near its lower end which extends through said chimney. An outlet-tube 11 is disposed near the upper end of the receiver and may be provided with a mouthpiece 12 or any other suitable device for facilitating the discharge of air therefrom into the mouth or nostrils of the user. A thermometer 13 is mounted on the removable cap 1% of the receiver 9 and may be suitably braced, as shown at 15.
In using the herein-described device for supplying dry hot air the lamp 1 is lighted and chimney I is placed in position on the collar 2. The heat from the lamp will, as is obvious, dry and heat the air passing into the receiver 9 from tube 10, and if this air is placed under pressure it will be readily discharged through the outlet 11. The receiver 9 can be removed by unscrewing the inlet-tube and lifting said receiver from the hood.
It will be seen that this device is very simple, inexpensive. and compact in construction, and by making proper connections to the inlet-tube it can be utilized for supplying hot medicated air.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modification may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I therefore claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described the combination with a heater and a chimney supported thereby, said chimney having an annular flange at one end; of a hood, legs extendingtherefrom and bearing upon the flange, an air-receiver mounted within the hood and extending thereabove, an inlet-tube extending through the chimney into the receiver, an outlet-tube extending from the receiver above the hood, a removable cap upon the receiver.
