Be it known that 1, WILLIAM R. WARNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vergennes, in the county of Addison andState of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Burner and Inhaler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved burner and inhaler arranged to permit the user to burn suitable herbs or drugs in a very convenient manner and to bring the fumes arising from the burning process directly to the mouth or nostrils of a patient to insure proper application of the fumes without waste of the herbs or drugs.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims;

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1.

The improved device consists, essentially, of a shell A, formed with a dome A, terminating at its apex in a spout A adapted to be engaged by one end of a rubber tube B, placed at its other end in the mouth or nostril of a patient when the device is to be used for the purpose mentioned. The spout A is ordinarily closed by a cap 0, preferably hung on a chain 0, attached to the dome, so that the fumes arising from the burning herbs or drugs may first accumulate in the shell or dome A before the tube B is placed in position.

The shell A is provided with a bottom D, connected by a hinge E with one side of the shell, the free end of the bottom having a spring handle and lock D to permit the operator to open or close the bottom and to lock it in position by the handle, and lock D hearing against the side of the shell A opposite to where the hinge E is located. The upper surface of the bottom D is provided with a burner for burning herbs or drugs centrally within the shell, the fumes of the burning herbs or drugs passing to the mouth or nostrils of the patient by the dome A, the spout A and the tube B, as previouslyexplained. The burner is formed by the central solid portion of. the bottom D and by an annular flange D rising from the bottom and surrounding said central portion, so that drugs or herbs placed on said central portion are retained in a central position therein, the shell permitting the process of burning and generating the fumes. The bottom D, outside of the annular flange D is formed with air-inlets D to allow outside air to pass into the shell and to the burner to insure proper combustion of the ignited drugs or herbs.

In using the device the operator swings the bottom D into an open position to allow of placing the herbs or drugs to be burned upon the burner, and then said drugs or herbs are ignited, after which the bottom'D is closed. Escape of the risingfumes from the shell is at first prevented by the cap C, then in position on the spout A but as soon as sufficient fumes for a thorough application on the affiicted part have accumulated then the cap (3 is removed and the tube B is placed on the spout A so that the fumes pass to the mouth and nostrils of the patient and are inhaled by the patient to cure asthma and other diseases.

When the device is not in use for burning and inhaling purposes, it can be readily utilized to store drugs or herbs in large quanti ties in the shell, so that said drugs or herbs are always at hand to permit of using the device for the purposes described.

Having thus fully described my invention,

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A burner and inhaler, comprising a shell having a hinged bottom, a dome, a dischargespout extending from the apex of the dome, a flexible tube for carrying off the generated fumes, and a burner on the upper side of said hinged bottom, for receiving and burning the drugs, said burner being formed by a central solid portion of the bottom and by an annular flange rising. from said bottom and surrounding said central portion, the bottom being provided with air-inlets outside said flange and leading into the shell, to furnish the necessary air for proper combustion of herbs or drugs placed in the burner, as set forth.
