APPLICATION IIL-ED MAY 17. 1906.

ADOLPHE GORDEAU, OF STE. MADELEINE, QUEBEC, CANADA.
LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented Dec. 10, 1907.
Application filed May 17,1906. filerial No. 317.264.
To all whom it may concern: 7,
Be it known that I, ADOLPHE GoRnEAU, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Ste; Madeleine, county of St. Hyacinthe, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to looks; the object of my invention is to provide a lock specially adapted for use on trunks a more specific object is to provide alock of that character which may be easily operated by a simple pointed instrument in the nature of a key; and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the outer plate of a lock; Fig. 2 is an inside elevation of the outer plate showing the parts in one position; Fig. 3 is an inside elevation of the outer plate, showing the parts in a different position to that shown in Fig. 2; and, Fig. 4 is la llgngitudinal vertical section through the Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a casing, to which is pivotally secured a plate 2, as by the pin 3. Carried by the casing 1 is-a spring 4, adapted to bear on the plate 2 and to actuate the same away from the trunk or other receptacle locked when the device is operated to be unlocked.
Disposed on the inner face of the plate 2, are two filling blocks 5, provided with guide lugs.6 adjacent their op osite sides. Slidably disposed between t e guide lugs 6 on the filling blocks 5, is a yoke 7, provided with the projecting cross pieces 8. Disposed between the cross pieces 8 on the inner face of the yoke 7, is a disk 9, towhich is eccentrically connected a spindle 10, having an enlarged head 11 disposed flush with the plate 2. The enlarged head 11 is provided with a recess 12, and has disposed through its opposite end a pin 13 adapted to connect the disk 9 to the spindle 10. Rotation of the spindle 10 will cause movement of the disk 9, the
edges of which bear against the cross pieces 8 and will reciprocate the yoke 7 longitudinally of the plate 2.
Secured to the trunk body, or other apparatus to be fastened, is a casing 14, corresponding in shape to the plate 2, and adapted to receive the same. Secured to the end wall of the casing 14, or formed integral therewith, is a projecting lug 15, under which the forward end 16 of the yoke is adapted to ride when the yoke is reciprocated downward (as viewed in the drawings). The casing 1 is provided with guide lu s 17 adapted to engage the inner surface 0 the casing 14.
Disposed through the plate 2 is an annular member 18, provided with a peripheral channel 19, in which channel engages the wall of an opening formed through the lowermost filling block 5. The annular member 18 is provided with a slot 20, and on its outer surface is provided with recesses 21 adapted to receive an actuating member to rotate the same.
Disposed through the annular member 18 is a spindle 22, provided with a recess 23 to receive an actuating member adapted to rotate the same. Secured on the spindle and bearing on the inner face of the yoke 7, is a disk 24, provided with a slot 25. The yoke 7 is provided adjacent its forward end with a plate or flange 26 constituting a locking member, which is adapted to abut against the disk 24 and the annular member 18 to prevent retraction of the yoke 7. To ermit retraction of the yokes 7, the disk 24 may be turned so that its slot 25 will permit the passage of the plate 26. The annular member 18 may also be turned so that its slot 20 may register with the slot 25. The flange 26 of the yoke 7 is adapted to engage the lug 15 of the casing 14, and thereby couple or look the casing 14 and plate 2 together.
The outer face of the annular member 18 and the plate 2 are provided with indicating characters 27 to indicate from the outside when the slots 20 and 25 register in the path of movement of the plate 16, so as to indicate to the user that rotation of the disk 9 may cause retraction of the yoke 7. The arrangement of these characters 27 may be known only to the operator, so that the construction forms a combination lock.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a lock, the combination with a pivotally supported plate, of a slidably supported yoke carried by the plate, and having cross pieces thereon, a disk disposed between the cross pieces, a spindle secured eccentrically to the disk and provided with a head flush with the plate, said head provided with a slot therein, means adapted to lock the yoke against movement, and a casing having a lug adapted to be engaged by the yoke.
2. In a lock, the combination with a casing, of a plate pivotally connected thereto, filling blocks on said plate, having guide lugs thereon, a yoke slidably mounted between said lugs, locking means attached to saild yoke, and an eccentric for operating said yo (e.
3. In a lock, the combination with a casing, of a plate pivotally connected thereto, filling blocks mounted on said plate, having guide lugs thereon, a yoke slidably mounted between said lugs, and having cross pieces thereon, locking means attached to said yoke, and an eccentric adapted to engage said cross pieces and thereby operate said yoke.
4. In a lock, the combination with a casing, of a plate pivoted thereto, filling blocks on said plate, having guide lugs thereon, a yoke slidably mounted between said lugs, an eccentric for operating said yoke, a flange on said yoke, and a device adapted to engage said flange and thereby prevent movement of the aforesaid yoke.
5. In a lock, the combination with a casing, o f a plate pivotally connected thereto, filling blocks on said plate, having guidcways thereon, a yoke slidably mounted in. said guideways, an eccentric for operating said yoke, a flange on said yoke, and a rotatable member in the path of movement of said flange adapted in one position to allow movement of said yoke and in all other positions to prevent movement of the same.
6. In a lock, the combination with a casing, of a plate pivotally connected thereto, filling blocks on said, plate, having guideways thereon, a yoke slidably mounted in said guideways, a lug on the aforesaid, casing, and an eccentric for operating said yoke whereby'the lower end of the same may be projected behind said lug to engage the same and thereby lock said plate and casing together.
7. In a lock, the combination with a casing, of a plate pivotallyeonnected thereto, filling blocks on said plate, having guidonutys thereon, a yoke slidably mounted in said guideways, a flange on said yoke, means for reciprocating said yoke, a rotatable disk lying in the path of movement of said flange, and a slot in said rotatable member adapted to receive said flange to thereby allow retraction of the aforesaid yoke.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ADOLPIIE (JORDEAU.
