UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
APPLIANCE FOR MAINTAINING GARMENTS IN A FOLDED CONDITION.
, No. 872,924. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 1. 1907. Serial No. 365.811.
Patented. Dec. 3, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that 1, LA VAUGHN P. GAGE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Denver, in thev county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Appliances for Maintaining Garments in a Folded Condition, of which the following is a specification. 3
My invention relates to a new article of manufacture by the use of which a laundered shirt, shirtwaist or other garment, may be maintained in a folded condition while at the same time 't prevents its becoming creased or wrinkled by manipulation.
It pertains more specifically to a combination of the so-called shirt board employed by many laundries to reinforce or stiffen a folded shirt, and a band adapted to be secured around the garment to maintain its folds in their relative positions.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and readily'adjusted device by which the folded garment may be reinforced and its folds secured without the use of pins orother separate fastening means and which in consequence saves labor, time and annoyance not only to the launderer but also to the prospective wearer.
An additional advantage derived from the use of the device is that by obviating the employment of pins and the like, it prevents garment is subsequently reinforced by placing a iece of stiff paste board or analogous material cut to the size of the'folded article between the upper portion of the back and the thereupon folded sides and skirt, after which the folds are secured together. The contrivance invented by me to accomplish these two objects consists, as shown in the drawings, of a board 10 similar to that now in use, provided at its upper extremity with an integral, centrally positioned, short and narrow extension 11, which terminates in a laterally ranging narrow integral stri 12 of suflicient length to encircle the fol ed garment. 7
The connection 11 is in in substantially parallel re ation to-the board and extends when the latter is in position upon the back of the garment, over the outermost side of the folded skirt 9, while the strap 12 is placed transversely around the garment and its free extremity secured upon the end of the connection 10 or the adjacent integral portion of the stra by the use of an adhesive substance 13 wiiili which the free end of the strap is coated. The strap, thus secured, forms a continuous band which effectively confines the folds of the garment and which is held against displacement by connection with the board, which stiffens the folded shirt and prevents its bending or wrinkling.
I Wish it understood that modifications may be made in the manner of connecting the board and the band or in the arrangement of the latter as for instance the form shown in Fig. posed of twoportions 12 extending. oppositely' from the extremity of the connection'll.
It should furthermore be observed that when the article is employed in connection with stiifbosomed shirts the board 10 may be abbreviated and reduced to a len th sufficient to prevent displacement of t e band, (see 10 Fig. 5), and that by providing a strap nected with the board 10 by the connection 11, its length may be reduced so asto only partly encompass the garmcntya's shown in Fig. 6.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is'. I
l. A new article of manufacture comprising in combination a member adapted to be inserted between the ractice re-curved holes and finger stains.
I attain my objects trated in the accompanying which Figure 1- represents a rear view of a folded shirt with the device in operative position. Fig. 2 a sectional perspective view of the same, Fig. 3- a perspective view of the device before it is applied, Fig. 4 a fragmentary detailed view of the same in elevation, and Figs. 5- and 6 respectively an elevation and a plan view showing modified forms. Referring to the drawings the reference numeral 5 designates a shirt com rising the front 6, including the usually sti bosom 7, and the back 8. After the garment has been washed and ironed, it is folded 'to the size of its bosom by turning the side portions and the therewith connected sleeves inwardly upon the back 8, after which the skirt 9 is laid over the u per portion of the folds,'leaving the'bosom o the shirt exposed, as shown in the drawings. The
by the means illusdrawings in 5 in which the band is com- 12 composed of pliable material confolds of a folded garment and means adaptedto maintain the garment in its folded state, forming part thereof.
2. A new article of manufacture, comprising in combination a member adapted to be inserted between the folds of a folded garment and a member adapted to encircle the garment, connected therewith.
' A new article of manufacture comprising in combination a member adapted to be inserted between the folds of a foldedgarment and having a recurved extension, and a band extending laterally from the latter and.
adapted to encircle the garment.
4. A new article of manufacture comprisingin combination a member adapted to be inserted between thefolds of a folded garment, a band adapted to encircle the garment and a connection between the latter and an extremity of the said member.
5. A new article of manufacture comprising in combination a member adapted to be inserted between the folds of a folded garment, and a band adapted to encircle the garment, connected therewith means to secure its extremities.
6. A new article of manufacture comprising in combination a member adapted to be inserted between the folds of a folded garment and having a reeurved extension", and a 30 band extending laterally from the latter, adapted to encircle the garment and having an adhesive substance upon its extremity.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LA VAUGHN P. GAGE.
