To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l-IEvRY W. CovER'r, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Waelevation of a window having a sash provided with my improved sash-holder. Fig. 2 is a similar view, on an enlarged scale, of a broken-away portion of the sash and casing, showing my improved sash-holder. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the sashholder, on a plane parallel with the sash, showing the position of the holding-roller when the sash is being raised, the plane of the section being indicated by the broken line 8-3 in Fig. 5. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the holding-roller in the position which it automatically assumes to prevent downward movement of the sash. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the sash, showing the sash-holding mechanism in elevation in vthe position shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a view in perspective of the case for theV sashholding mechanism. Fig. 7 is a view in perspective of an adjustable stop for the sashholding roller. The principal object of the invention is to frictionally support in raised position a window-sash, while permitting the same to be forcibly lowered when desired.
Other objects of the invention will appear in connection with the following description.
In carrying out my invention, I confine between an inclined surface of an elastic body mounted upon one of two relatively movablemembers, and a slideway on the other of said members, a roller adapted to engage said other member whereby relative movement of one of said members infoneldil rection is freely permitted, while movement in the opposite direction causes the'roller to ride up the inclined surface until forced against said other member with su'Hicient pressure to prevent further relative movement in that direction.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1, is a window-casing and, 2, is a sash movable in vertical grooves or slideways, 3, formed in the casing in the usual manner.
Mounted upon and set into one of the vertical members of the sash, adjacent to the neighboring slideway,'is a case, 4, containing the sash-holding or supporting mechanism. As shown in Fig. 3, the case, 4, is inserted in a recess formed in the sash, and is held therein by a cover-plate, 5, attached to the face of the sash by screws 6. Located within a central compartment, 7, of the case, 4, is a wedge-shaped body, 8, of rubber or similar elastic material presenting on its outer side an upwardly and outwardly inclined surface, 9, with which is adapted to make contact a roller, l0, which is also adapted to make contact with the bottom of the neighboring slideway-groove, 3, in the casing, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
To adapt the device for use with sashes which fit more or less loosely in their slidesomewhat deeper than the thickness of the rubber-block, and to insert one or more backing-plates, ll, between said rubberblock and the back wall of the case, a suflicient number or thickness of such backingplates being so inserted to cause the roller, 10, to at all times rest against the bottom wall of the slideway-groove, 3. The roller being in its lowermost position, as shown in Fig. 3, will, when the sash is lowered, be caused, by frictional engagement with the bottom wall of the slideway-groove, to ride or roll up the' inclined surface, 9, of the elastic-block, 8, which tends to force the roller with constantly increasing pressure against the wall of the slideway until the frictional resistance becomes suflicient to support the weight of the sash, or, if an unlimited extent of inclined surface be presented to the roller, until frictional resistance becomes sufficient to resist and prevent all further movement of the sash in that direction.

to prevent accidental downward movement of a window-sash and not as a positive lock I, therefore, provide means for limiting the extent of movement of the roller, 10, upwardly along the inclined surface, 9, of the elastic-block, which means can be adjusted to adapt the device to the weight of the sash with which it is to be used. Said means, as shown in its preferred form in the drawings, comprises a slide-plate, 1.2, located within the. case, y4, and having its upper end offset to form a stop, 13, located in the path traversed by the roller, 10, in ascending the incline, 9, on the elastic-block. As soon as the roller, 10,'engages the stop, 13, its further movement up the incline, 9, is prevented, and thereafter no further increase of frictional resistance can rbe developed by a further movement of `the sash, so that by regulating .the position of the stop, 13, the roller, 10, can be permitted to travel up the incline, 9, a sufficient distance to develop all the frictional resistance that is necessary to support the weight of the sash, but, not to travel-up the inclined surface on the elastic-block, 9, a sufficient distance to develop so much frictional resistance that the sash cannot be forcibly moved except by hand. By thus properly locating the stop, 13, it is possible to forcibly lower the window, when desired, while at the same time, if it is d esired to leave the window open, it is sufficient to merely locate the sash at the desired height, at which it will be automatically supported by the roller, 10, as above described.
The slide-plate, 12, is made very slightly wider than the depth of the casing, 4', so that, when the cover-plate, 5, is applied, it will engage the outer edge of the slide-plate, 12, and serve to clamp and held the same in adjusted position. Adjustment of the slide-plate, 12, and stop, 13, is permitted when desired by means of a thumb-piece, 14, on the slideplate which projects through a slotted aperture, 15, in the cover-plate 5.
Any known form of adjustable stop may be employed to limit the movement vof the roller, 10.
My improved holder can be mounted in any position upon one of two relatively movable members where it is adapted to have the roller, 10, engage the other of said members, and the device may be mounted upon a sash, or the like, in any known manner such that the holding-roller will be confined between one of two relatively movable members and an inclined surface of an elastic body mounted uponv the other of said members.
What'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, and in combination, a pair of relatively movable members; an elastic body'mounted upon one of said members, and having an inclined surface adjacent to the other member; a friction-roller confined between said inclined surface of said elastic bo'dy and a slideway on said other member; an adjustable stop for limiting the movement of said roller along said inclined surface; and means whereby said stop can be adjusted.
2. In a device of the class described7 and in combination, a pair of relatively movable members; an elastic block mounted upon one of said members, and having an inclined surface adjacent to the other member; a friction-roller confined between the inclined surface of said elastic block and a slideway on said other member; and removable backingplates for said elastic block.
3. In a device of the class described, and in combination, a pair of relatively movable members; a case mounted upon one of said members; a cover-plate for said c-ase; an elastic block mounted within said case, and having an inclined surface adjacent to the other of said members; a friction-roller confined between the inclined surface of 'said elastic block and a slidewayv on said other member; a stop in the path of said roller; a stop-carrying plate located within said case, and adapted to be engaged by said coverplate; and means for clamping said coverplate upon said stop-carrying plate to secure the latter in adjusted. position.
4. In a device ofthe class described, and in combination, a pair of relatively movable members; a case mounted upon one of said members; a cover-plate for said case provided with a slot; an elastic block mounted within said case, and having an inclined surface adjacent to the other of said members; a friction-roller confined between the inclined surface of said lelastic block and a slideway on said other member; a stop in the path of said roller; a stop-carrying plate l0- cated within said case, and. adapted to be engaged by said cover-plate means for clamping said cover-plate upon said stop-carrying plate to secure the latter in adjusted position; and a thumb-piece on said step-carrying plate projecting outwardly through the slot in said cover.
