BACK BAND BUCKLE.
APPLIOATION FILED JULY 18.1907.

BACK-BAND BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed July 18. 1907. Serial No. 384397.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN F. CoNNEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at T eckville, in the county of Lafayette and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Back-Band Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in harness, and more particularly to a back-b and buckle for holding the trace chain or tug in position at the side of the animal, and one of the objects thereof is to provide a back-band buckle in a manner as hereinafter set forth with means whereby the back-band can .be adjusted so as to provide for different sizes of animals.
A further object of the invention is to provide a back-band buckle with means, as hereinafter set forth, for adjusting the backband and retaining it in the position to which it has been adjusted.
A further object of the invention is to provide a back-band buckle with means, as
hereinafter set forth, for adjusting the backband, said means further constituting provision for securing the buckle to the backband.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a back-band buckle which shall be simple in its construction, strong, durable, efiicient in its use, adapted to be adjustably connected to the back-band, conveniently attached in position and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a backband buckle in accordance with this invention showing the same attached to the back-band and having the trace connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a back-band buckle in accordance with this invention. Fig. 3 is a detail showing the reel shaft. Fig. 4 is a like view showing the stop member for arresting the lateral movement of the reel shaft, and Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the lever arm for rotating the reel shaft and which also constitutes the stop arm for locking the reel shaft from rotation.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters 1 denotes a supporting plate which is of greater width than the width of the back-band 25* The plate 1 is formed at its sides with the forwardly-projecting ears 2 having openings 3 into which is journaled the reel shaft 4. The ears 2 constitute bearings for the reel shaft 4, as will be evident and said shaft 4 is provided with a longitudinally-extending slot 5 of a length equal to the width of the back-band 2 and of a width to allowof the passing of the back-band there-through. One end of the reel shaft 4 is headed, as at 6, so as to prevent pulling of the shaft 4 in one direction through the openings 3 in the ears 2. The shaft 4 is of such length as to project from one side of the plate, and, through that portion of the slot 5 in the projecting end of the shaft 4 extends a lever arm 7 having upsetting ends 8 to prevent said arm 7 dropping through the slot 5. One of the functions of the arm 7 is to permit of the convenient turning of the shaft 4, and the other function of said arm 7 is to constitute a sto to prevent the shaft 4 from rotating.
In t 's latter connection it will be stated that the lever arm 7 associates with the laterally-extending lug 9 projecting from one of the ears 2 and which is adapted to be engaged by the lower end of the arm 7 when the latter is in the position shown in Fi 1. By such arrangement the shaft 4 wiIl be prevented from rotating in one direction as the lug 9 constitutes an abutment'for the lower end of the arm 7 when the latter is in the position shown in Fig. 1.
To prevent lateral movement of the shaft 4 an H-shaped' member 10' is provided. The member 10 is adapted to be carried by the projecting end of the shaft 4 and abut against one of the ears 2. The position of the member 10 to prevent lateral movement of the shaft 4 is that as shown in Fig. 2. It would be well to state in conmotion with the member 10 that it associates with the head of the shaft 4 and is interposed between the arm 7 and one of the ears 2, and it is evident in view of such arrangement that said member 10 will precentrally thereof and below the shaft 4 is slitted to provide a forwardly-projecting portion 11, Which constitutes a coupling medium for the trace hook 12. The latter extends at right angles With respect to the body portion of the plate 1 and has an angular portion 13 which is inserted through the forwardly-projecting portion 11 and then bent upon itself as at 14, and said angularly-extending portion 13 in connection With the forwardly-extending portion 11 of the plate connects the hook 12 to the supporting plate 1.
What I claim is 1. A back-band buckle comprising a supporting plate provided With a pair of forwardly-projecting ears, a headed reel shaft journaled in said ears and projecting from one side of one of said ears, said shaft having an elongated slot to receive the back-band, means extending through the shaft and associating with the head thereof for preventing lateral movement of the shaft, a lever arm extending through the projecting end of the shaft, a hook attached to the plate, and means projecting laterally from one of said ears and associating with said arm for arresting rotative movement of the reel shaft.
2. A back-band buckle comprising a supporting plate, a reel shaft journaled in said plate and adapted to adjustably connect the back-band thereto, said shaft being of a length greater that the Width of the plate, said shaft further having one end provided With a head, means extending through the projecting end and associating With the head of the shaft to prevent lateral movement of the latter, a lever arm extending through the projecting end of the shaft for rotating it, a hook coupled to the plate, and means carried by the plate and associating with said lever arm for arresting the rotative movement of the shaft.
11 testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
