PICKING MOTION FOR iLOOIllES.
' Specification of Letters Eatent. I
Patented Dec. 3,1907.
Application filed July 12.1906. Serial llo. 325.835-
fo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1 WrLnL-iM H. AYER, a citizen oi the United States, residingat Claremont,- in the county of Sullivan and State of. New Ham shire, have invented a certain new and useful? Improvement in Picking-Motion for Looms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the My invention relates to improvements in picker motion for looms and particularly aplies to themechanism constituting the picking motion thereof.
The object of the invention is to improve )llx'} picking ml .nism by providing novel features in the construction of the lug strap particularly, to render the same more durable the picker stafl to provide novel means of adjustment between the picker arm and lug'stick, and also novel adjusting mechanism between the picker arm and shoe or rock shaft; and to improve the general. construction of this class of devices as. will a )pear hereinafter.
With these o ects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter described more fully ointed out in the claims, and as exemplified in the accompanying drawings. 7
In the drawings 1 have shown one example or the complete physical embodiment of the invention, constructed according to the best in do i have so" far devised for the practicat ap )llCit'tlOIi of the principle,- andone 'modi fier form of a part of the invention.
Figure 1 shows much ofthe mechanism oi a loom as is necessary to illustrate the application of lflY lIl'VQlltiOIl thereto, and t same is shown in operative position. Fig. 2
is a view taken at right angles to Fig. 1, showing the lug stick in section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the lug strap and a pcrtionoi' the lug stick. Fig. 4 is an enlarged etail section illustrating the means for regulating the length of the lug stick.
. Fig. 5 is a modified form of the lug istrap,
shown in section, and, Fig. 6 is a view of a modified picker arm.
Referring to the drawings, the mmieral 1 designates the frame of the loom; 2, the
pickeifstall', 3 the pivot, point of the stall? supported in the rocker arm 4-;
5,. 5 su pportq lugs secured to the irame; 6,
the rock that journaled in said lugs; 7, a slidable block provided with a squared. opening and the lug stick;
mounted on the shaft 6, and further provided with {a set screw 8. by means of which screw the slidable block may be secured at adjusted points on the shaft; '9, the picker arm ;-]0, a bolt passed through the picker armand also through a flange 11 011- the block 7, and provided withan'ut for securingsaid flange and picker arm; -12, anoil'sot or angular portion, forming a flange of the picker arm and located atits' lower end, and adapted to overhang the square rock shaft, as seen clearly in Fig. 4 13, aset screw passed through a threaded opening in the flange l2 and bearing against the rock shaft; 14 a lock nut on. the screw 1.3; 15, an angular lug formed at the upper-end of the picker arm and located parallel with therock shaft; 16, .17, an opening inthc end of the lug stick of a size sullicient to pass the lug 15, and together with the lug forming the connection between the picker arm and the lug stick; 18, thelug strap; 1!), slots l'orined near the inner ends of armsoi the lug strap; 20, a bolt passed through said slots andalso through an opening in. the end of the-lug stick for forming the commotion therebctween 21-, 21 are bandsor straps of leather, bent to U-shape as shown, and in some instances provided with a metallic filling piece 22; 23, a Wearing block preferablycomposed o'f-layers of leather or any other. suitable material and located in one end ct thelug strap; 24, a bolt passed through openings in the lug strap and b.lock,fl'or scouring the block to the'lugstrap, and provided with a suitablenut, and 25 an opening in the lug strap to accoimnodate the, picker stall.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5 ll omit the metallic filling piece in constructing the lug strap and form the lug of a number of layers 26, preferably of leather, (but of course it will be understood that I may make this lug of layers of ticking, ducking, or in fact any material which would be suitable for the purpose) and the block '27 in this instance is sewed to the lug strap, as represented by threads 28. 1 also reserve the right to dispense with the metallic filling piece when the-wearing block is secured to justed position the bolt 10is again tightened.
is reduced to a minimum.
and consequently the expense ofmaintaining the machine. In the construction of the Wearing block I preferably use leather, as I find this material to possess the best frictional qualitiesor properties, and when the block rldes upon the picker staff, the friction I do not wish to limit myself, however, to the exclusive use of leather in the construction of the wearing block, as other suitable materials may be found which will perform the service as Well.
The connection between the lug stick and picker arm is extremely simple and yet very effective, as the stud or lug 15 is shaped to form a securing means as well as a bearing between the lug stick and picker arm. The lug stick is attached to the picker arm stud before connection to the machine, by inserting theextreme end of the stud through the opening in the lug stick and then permitting the picker arm to be lowered, then the lug stick is attached to the lug strap, and the upright portion of the stud prevents disconnection of the lug stick and the picker arm. .By manipulating, the screw 13 in the flange 12, and with the screw bearing on the rock shaft, the upper end of the ieker arm may be moved toward or away from the picker staff, the movement being on the bolt 10, as a center, and when the proper position is secured the connection may be made rigid by tightening up on bolt 10 by means of its nut,
In the modified form of picker arm illustrated in Fig. 6, the rock shaft '6" is formed with a slotted enlarged portion in which the picker arm 9 is held by bolt 10. When bolt 10 is loosened the adjusting bolt 13 may be turned to draw the picker arm away from the rock shaft 6, and to secure rigidity in the, ad-
A lug 15 is also used on this picker arm 9".
In the first instance, if the lugstick is accidentally broken, by removing the bolt 20, which fastens the strap to the stick, the stick may be readily disengagedfrom the picker arm by turning the lug stick oil' the lug 15 on the picker arm, and a new stick may be attached by a reverse procedure.
From the foregoing description taken in l with the bolt and use threads for securing the block to the strap; I may also usethe strap with or without the metallic filling piece; I may use the separate elements, of the invention, such as the picker arm or lug strap in combination with each other, or may supply a machine with either of them separately.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new Letters Patent is: e
1. In a loom, and in combination, the picker staff, lug stick and picker arm, an aperture near one end of the lug stick, an angular lug on the picker arm for engagement with said opening or aperture; a rock shaft, a
and desire to-seeure by 'slidable block thereon and pivotally connected to said. picker arm, and adjusting means on the picker arm adapted to bear on said shaft.
2. In aioom, and in combination, the picker stall, lug stick, and picker arm, an opening in the lug, stick and a stud on the picker arm engaging said opening; a rock shaft, a movable block on said shaft, a bolt securing said block and picker arm, and a set screw in the picker arm bearing on said shaft.
3. In a loom, the combination with the rock shaft thereof, of a picker arm adjustably secured to said shaft, :1 lug stick removably secured to said picker arm, and a lugstrap adjustably secured to said lug stick, said lug strap comprising alternate layers of leather, a flat metallic filling piece and an outer layer of leather, and a bearing block sewed in the looped end of the strap.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
