LUG-STRAP.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES H. WVHIT- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, and

resident of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Lug-Straps, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to looms and has for its object to provide a lug strap which may be adjusted in the direction of its length, the same being also constructed so that the leather loop engaging the picker stick will be yieldable to provide the necessary flexibility to properly drive the picker stick.

The lug strap in general use on looms is provided wit-h a leather loop or yoke at both ends, or a leather loop at one end and a woven fabric loop at the opposite end both being bolted to a strip or block of wood and in the use of this style of lug strap the fabric or the leather becomes stretched and. quickly worn requiring frequent adjustment and renewing.-

The essential feature of my improved strap is that one of the leather loops or yokes is replaced by a practically indestructible metal joint.

Another feature is that the strap is provided with simple and 'efiective means whereby it may be very readily adjusted to fit any loom of this character and to adjust and set the picker stick to the desired position and also to compensate for any wear which may occur.

Still another feature of the invention is the manner of attachingthe leather portion of the strap to the connector screw whereby the required amount of flexibility is obtained to permit the strap to adjust and accommodate itself to the motions, requirements and conditions necessary to the successful operation of the picker stick.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a portion of a loom frame with my improved lug strap set in position thereon for operating the picker stick. Fig. 2 is an enlarged top View of the lug strap in detail. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lug strap.

the loom frame in which is pivotally hung at 2 the knee lever 3, one end 4 of which extends downward. to provide a picker actuating arm, while the other end 5 extends forward and is provided with a roll 6 for engaging the surface of the rotating driving cam 7 which latter is mounted upon the cam shaft 8, the whole being arranged to operate the picker stick 9 through the medium of the lug strap 10 to throw the shuttle across the lay in the usual Way.

My invention consists primarily in the particular construction of the lug strap, one end of which is provided with a socket member 11 into which the end of the actuating arm 4 is adapted to fit, the wall of said socket being provided with a set' screw 24 for securing the same to said arm. The opposite end of this socket is forked and a block 13 is mounted on the pivot 14 and roll 15 between the fork arms 12 12. The opposite end of this block 13 is provided with a socket into which one end of the connector 16 is threaded and secured therein by means of the lock nut 17.

I have provided a thick, heavy leather yoke 18 for engaging the picker stick 9. The ends of this yoke are brought together and lapped one above the other, said ends being providedwith a hole through which the connector screw 16 passes. These strap ends are then secured in any desired position along the length of this connector screw by means of the washers 19 and 20 and the nuts 21 and 22. A head 23 is secured to the free end of the connector 16 against which the picker stick may bring up to limit its forward motion when released after throwing the shuttle across the loom.

By my improved construction of lug strap the picker stick may be adjusted to the desired position so as to regulate the amount of lost motion or exact time of engaging and operating the shuttle, it being only necessary to turn the nuts 21 and 22 to either lengthen or shorten the strap .as a whole. By turning the ends of the leather portion of the strap inward and lapping them one upon the other provides a certain amount of elasticity or flexibility to the strap which prolongs its life and increases its eifectiveness. By providing a swinging joint between the actuating arm and picker stick renders the whole strap sufficiently flexible to enable it to readily accommodate itself to all the motions, requirements and conditions necessary to the successful operation of the picker stick.

The device is very simple and inexpensive in construction and effective in its operation and may be attached and detached very quickly to and from a loom.
