PICKING MECHANISM FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,452, dated April 30, 1889.

Be it kn own that we, JOSEPH HORROOKS and EDWIN HoRRooKs, subjects of the Queen of England, residing at Bradford, Yorkshire,
England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picking Mechanism for Looms for Weaving, (for which we have obtained a patent in England, No. 9,279, dated June 30, 1887, and for which a patent has been obtained in Germany, No. 45,718, dated June 29,1888) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the picking motion or mechanism for actuating the pickers in looms for weaving; and its object is to provide a durable and efiicient motion or arrangement of simple construction and capable of'allowing the loom to be reversed without actuating or disturbing the shuttle.
The invention consists of the arrangement, hereinafter described, in which the pickingstick is mounted on a short vertical shaft provided with an arm near the top adapted to engage with the upper end of an approXi-' mately-vertioal lever provided with a loose pawl or pendent piece and actuated at the required time by an arm or its equivalent projecting from the shaft, commonly called the tappet-shaft.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of such parts of a loom as G, secured to the frameD. An arm, E, projects at right angles from the shaft B, and is provided with a conical or taper anti-friction roller, F, which engages with the anti-friction roller G, mounted on the top of the lever H, pivoted on the stud J, projecting from the loom-frame D. An arm, K, projecting from the end of the tappet-shaft L, carries an anti- From the-foregoing description it will be 7 seen that as at the beginning of the pick (the position represented in the drawings) the roller G bears against the extremity of the roller F; but as the motion is extended it rolls alongF, and at the termination of the pick has almost reached the inner end of such roller, thus proportionately accelerating the speed of the picking-stick, which enables it to communicate a smooth throw to the shuttle without jerking it, and it is obvious that the antifriction rollers F, G, and M greatly reduce the friction of the working parts.
The above-mentioned pawl or pendant piece N, hinged to the lower end of the lever H, is provided to enable the loom to be reversed, and so allow the arm K to turn backward, and by raising the pawl N pass the lever H without operating it.
It is obvious that a similar arrangement of mechanism will be required at the other end of the loom.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of our said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, We declare what we claim is 1. The combination, with an arm mounted on the tappet-shaft, of an approximately-vertical lever adapted to be oscillated by the said arm at each revolution of the tappet-shaft, and a picking-shaft provided with a projecting arm engaging the upper end of said lever, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with an arm projecting from and rotating with the tappet-shaft, of a lever, a pawl or pendant pivoted to the lever, so that the pawl will be engaged and the lever oscillated by the arm as the tappetshaft revolves in one direction, but the lever will not be oscillated when the shaft rotates in the opposite direction and the arm engages the pawl, and a picking-shaft provided with an arm engaging the lever and operated by the same when the lever is oscillated, substantially as described.
3. A mechanism for actuating the pickers in looms, comprising a vertical rocking-shaft, a picking-stick extending from the same, an arm projecting from the shaft, a lever adapted to engage the arm and rock the shaft, and mechanism for intermittently oscillating the lever, substantially as described.
4. In a mechanism for actuating the pickers of looms, the combination of a vertical picking-shaft, a picking-stick extending from the same, an arm projecting laterally from the shaft, a conical or taper anti-friction roller journaled on the arm, a lever to engage said roller and intermittently rock the pickingshaft, and the tappet-shaft provided with an
