To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN ONEIL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wilmerding, in the county of Allegheny and State .of Pennsylvania, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners and Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to t e accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to improvements in rail fasteners and locks, and the invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive rail .fastener for preventing a ra1l from being laterally displaced upon a tie or rail support.

Another object of this invention is the provision of positive and reliable means for preventing the parts i of the rail fastener being separated, said means being protected from water, dirt and such matter as w uld tend-to injure the same. i A further object of'this invention is to provide a novel rail fastener that can be used. 'for retaining the confronting ends of two rails together.

With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be presently described, and then specifically pointed out in the ap ended claims. p

The rail fastener embodies a chair comprising a base plate 1 having an integral splice bar 2,' adapted to embrace the inner sides of rails 3. The chair 1 can be placed upon the top of the tie 4 or similar support, or can be partially embedded in the same, as at-5.

The outer sides of the rails 3 are embraced by a splice bar 6, said splice bar being recessed, as at 7 and 8, and secured to the base plate 1 .by vertically disposed bolts 9 and nuts 10. The heads 11 of the bolts 9 are countersunk in the base plate 1, while'the nuts ,10 are retained uponthe bolts 9 by a plate 12, hinged, as at 14, to seatin the recess 8 of the s lice bar 6. The hinged plate 12' is provide with a conventional form-of lock 15 manipulated by a key 16 entering a key opening or hole 17. The latch 18 of the lock 15 engages in a latch opening 19 formed in thevertical wall of the splice bar 6, said latch retaining the hinged plate 12 in a closed position, preventing the nuts 10 from being surreptitiously or accidentally re- -moved from the ends of the bolts 9.

From the novel construction of my im proved fastener, it will be observed that'the nuts 10 of. the bolts 9 cannot become entirely disengaged from the bolts 9 due to vibrations of the rails 3, when rolling steel: is passing over said rails. By unlocking the plate 12 easy access can be had to the nuts, when it is desired to. remove the splice bar 6 and renew the rails 3, it of course being undierstood that the spikes 23 can be removed a so.

The fastener in its entirety is made of strong and durable metal and'various types of locks can be used for securing the hinged plate of the fastener in a closed position;

Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure 'by Letters Patent is: f i

In a rail fastener, the combination with rails and a support, of a chair carried by said support, comprising a base plate and a splice racing the outer sides of said rails, bolts extending u wardly through said base plate and splice ar, said'splice bar having recesses formed therein, nuts secured upon said bolts 1n one of said recesses, a plate hinged to said splice bar and seating in the other of said recesses, a lock carried by said bin ed plate and having a latch to engage in em sphce bar, said plate having a key open? ing formed therein, a shutter for normally closing said 0 ening, and meansfor securing said chair an splice bar to said support.
