Description

(No Model.)
WWW/WWW NITED STATES PATENT OFFTCE.
OWEN G. GATES, JR., OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
FSTENER FOR MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,602, dated April 2, 1895.
Application filed September 1' 7, 1894. Serial No. 523,244. (No model.) I
To @ZZ whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, OWEN G. GATES, Jr., a citizen ofthe United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented acertain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following,r is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure lis a sectional view of my improved fastener in operative position on thenpper and lower sashes. Fig. 2 is a similar View, showing a modied form of key for operating the dog or catch. y Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the upper sash-section of the fastener. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the lower sashsection of the fastener; and Fig. 5 is a crosssectional view of the lower sash-section, as`
taken ou line 5 5, Fig. 2.
This invention relates to anew and useful improvement in sash-fasteners, and consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts comprising myimproved fastener, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, A indicates what I term the male section of the fastener, which is secured to the upper edge of the meeting rail of the upper sash A. This member of the fastener is in the form of a shell, and is provided with a slot or opening in its face, through which projects the tongue portion of a dog B, pivoted therein, said tongue being reduced at its sides, forming stops, which contact w-ith the edges of the slot and limit the outward movement of the dog, but permitting a free inward movement thereof.
O is a spring located within the shell, whose tendency is to hold the dog in its projected position.
A are suitable ilanges by which the section A is secured to the meeting rail of the upper sash.
The other member, D,of the fastener, which I term the female section, consists of a shell D, which is provided with suitable flanges by which it may be secured to the upper face of the meeting rail of the lower sash D. This shell D is open at its bottom, and projects be- Ywhen both sashes are closed, as shown in Figs.
l and 2.
E indicates a curtain-wall or partition, which divides the shell DV vertically', said partition being about on the same vertical plane as the inner side face of the meeting rail. This wall E is formed with an opening e in its lower edge, while on each side of said opening are teeth or projections F. Shell D is provided with an opening or slot cl in one of its end walls, through which a key or other device may be introduced to disengage the dog B from the teeth F, when the parts are in a locked position, as shownin Fig. 1. When the dog is thus disengaged, either of the sashes may be raised or lowered as the case may be.
In Fig. 2, I have shown a trigger pivoted in the section D, which, by depressing the projecting handle, will be forced. in, disengaging the dog from the ra tchet-teeth during the 0peration of raising the lower sash or lowering the upper one.
It will be noted that the dog in the male section is always in readiness to engage the teeth in the female section, whenever the sashes are brought in such relation to each other that the parts can co-operate.
Having thus described my invention, what vI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sash-fastener, the combination with the male section in the form of a shell, which is adapted to be secured to the meeting rail of the upper sash, of a dog pivoted therein, a spring for holding the dog ina projected position, a female section in the form of a shell which is adapted to be secured to the meeting rail of the lower sash, a toothedportion in said female member with which the dog engages when the parts are in operative position, and a key for disengaging the dog from the teeth, substantially as described.
2. In a sash-fastener, the combination with a male section in the form of'a shell, and having an opening in its face, of a dog pivoted in said shell, the tongue of which dog projects through the opening, a spring for holding the dog in a projected position,r a female section In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my in the form of a shelha partition wall nzsaid signature in presence of two Witnesses, this female section having an opening in its lower 8th day of September, 1894:. edge, teeth on each side of said opening, with 5 which the dog in the male section is adapted Witnesses: Y
to :1o-operate, and a key for disengaging the F. R. CORNWALL, dog from the teeth, substantially as described. HUGH K. WAGNER.
