WILLBERT R. DE HARPPORTE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
HOT-WATER HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application ned June 10.1907. semi No. 378.151.
To all whom it 'may concern:
` Be it known that I, WILLBERT R. DE IIARPPORTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-VVater Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its especial object to provide an improved boiler or hot water heater for use in connection with hot water or steam heating plants, and to this end, it
.consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
The improved boiler is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the severalviews.
l Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, with some parts broken away, showing the improved boiler; and Fig. 2 is a view of the improved boiler taken on the line x2 x2 of Fig. 1.
The outer shell 1 of the boiler is shown as rectangular in horizontal cross section, and is provided with the usual ash pit 2, pit door 3, grate 4 and fuel door 5. The upper portion of this shell 1 is bulged or laterally expanded at opposite sides of the boiler, and
the top thereof is curved to form an arch, as indicated at 1u.
The fire box is formed by an inner metal shell 6 that extends parallel to the front, rear and side walls of the outer shell 1, but is spaced apart therefrom to form a thin water chamber 7. By reference to Fi 2,`
the arched top of the inner shell 6, is an arched water leg 8. At its front and rear ends this water leg 8 opens into the front and rear portions of the water chamber 7 and connects directly with the front and rear plates of the said inner shell 6. Arched deiecting plates 9, secured to the front and rear plates of the outer shell 1, project into the ends of the water leg .8, so that the heated water which rises in the front and rear end portions of the chamber 7 is caused to circulate within said arched leg 8.
The smoke pipe 10 is passed through the arched top of the outer shell 1 and registers with an opening in the arched top of the inner shell 6. Itv will also be seen that the products of combustion from the fire box can pass upward in two directions through a wide but shallow draft passage 11 formed between the bulged portion -of the inner shell 6 and the parallel walls of the arched leg 8, on their way to the smoke pipe 10. A hot water outlet 12, as shown, opens through the arched top of the outer shell 1 from the uppermost portion of the water chamber 7, and a cold water return pi e- 13 opens through the outer shell 1 into the ower portion of said chamber 7.
The numeral 14 indicates a drain cock which, as shown, opens through the shell l {')rom the lower portion of the water chamer 7. A
As is evident, the bulged or laterally expanded portion of the shell gives a greater amount of radiating surface to the boiler and causes the ames to take a winding course around the water leg 8 and into the bulged portion of said boiler, thereby increasing the efliciency of the boiler.
The above described arrangement not only aords a boiler which is of simple construction and capable of being made entirely from boiler iron or steel plate, but gives a boiler or heater a very high efficiency.
Ina boiler or hot water heater, the com# bination with an outer shell 1 bulged and arched at la, of an inner shell 6 spaced apart from said shell 1 to form a water chamber 7, the u per portion of said inner shell being bulge and arched and extended ap roximately arallel to the upper portion of said outer sfiell, a smoke pipe leading upward from an o ening in the arched top of said inner shel, an arched water leg 8 located in the upper portion of the combustion chamber and spaced apart from the upper portion of said inner shell to form a divided In testimony whereof I affix my signature draft passage leadirllg to said smke pipei in presence of two Witnesses.
curved eleetin ates 9 secure to sai outer shell 1 andgetending into the ends of WILLBERT R' DE HARPPORTE' 5 said Water leg 8, and extending approXi- Witnesses:
mately parallel to the arch of said Water leg H. D. KILGORE,
substantially as described. F. D. MERCHANT.
