SAMUEL BARTLEY, OF BARTLEY, NEW JERSEY.
H EATING-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 530,155, dated December 4, 1894.
Appli filed January 15,1894. Serial No. 496.895. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BARTLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bartley, Morris county, New Jersey, have invented certain newand usefulImprovements in Heating-Boilers, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forminga part of the same.
This invention consists in the specific construction for a steam boiler herein shown, described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section where hatched,of a boiler embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the upper section, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the lower section.
The lower section A is formed with an annular water space a inclosed between an outer cylindrical wall and an inner corrugated wall, and forms the fire pot I) provided with grate g. At the top of the water space a are four oval apertures 0 and beneath such apertures are bridges 0 extending between the outer and inner walls of the section.
The upper section B consists of a shallow cylindrical shell superposed upon the section A and provided with an annular water leg B extended downward from the under side of the section within the lower section A, and with an intermediate row of smoke fiues 0 connecting the fire pot b with the smoke chamber D having smoke outlet D which is superposed upon the section B. The water leg B is formed with an outer corrugated wall and with an inner cylindrical wall inclosing the feeder F which supplies fuel to the fire pot.
Apertures p are formed in the bottom of the dome section B similar to and adapted to register with the apertures 0 in the lower section to afford a circulation of water between the said sections.
Raised seats 8 are formed around the peripheries of the opposed faces of both sections and around the apertures 0 and 19 therein, and a packing 25, preferably formed of corrugated sheet copper, is interposed between such seats, and the sections are then bolted together.
To secure the sections together when in p and is screwed at one end into a threaded hole in the bridge 0 with its opposite end projected through a hole d in the upper side of the sectionB which is formed with a tapering seat d in its upper end; and the closed nut n having a conical face fitted to such seat is then screwed upon the bolt and turned sufficiently upon its seat 01 to draw the sections together upon the packing t with the force necessary to prevent leakage at such joint.
The provision of a conical surface of contact between the nut n and top of the upper section permits the employment of a hole d sufficiently large for easy access in applying the bolt, while eifectively centering the latterin tightening the same, and offering an eifective means of closing the hole d against leakage. Heretofore it has been common to bolt a series of horizontal sections together to form a vertical boiler by long bolts pass ing through each section of the series, whereby the unequal expansion of the metal in the sections and the bolts operated to produce undue strain upon the latter and their consequent injury for such use; but by my invention, while the dome section is of considerable depth over all, the drum portion is made shallow in order that short bolts may be employed for such purpose and in order to minimize the unequalexpansion and render the same inappreciable.
I am aware of the patent to Drake, No. 464,065, showing a boiler composed of an annular lower section with a superposed section provided with a series of vertical lines; and of the patent to Hogan, No. 326,982, disclosing a boiler comprising aseries of superposed annular sections with the upper section provided with a series of drop tubes extending downward within the lower sections to the fire pot. My invention differs from these constructions in the provision of the upper section with a series of fiues and a central depending water leg forming with the lower annular section an annular smoke space furnishing a free and direct passage from the fire pot to the smoke flue; while offering a clear heating surface on each side of such annular passage for the absorption of heat from the products of combustion as they pass to the fines. The provision of drop tubes in boilers having a central fuel magazine, not only shields the contiguous portions of the sections from the heated gases in their upward passage, but obstructs the flow of such products of combustion and thus injures the draft; where the upper section is formed as a cylindrical drum with vertical fines therein, as in my construction. I therefore disclaim the constructions disclosed in the said patents, limiting myself to those claimed herein.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is The steam boiler comprising the lower fire pot section formed with annular water space corrugated upon its inner periphery, a superposed shallow dome section provided with central annular water leg corrugated upon its outer periphery depending within the fire pot section and provided with smoke fines through such section leading from the fire pot, registering circulation apertures in the adjacent faces of the two sections, perforated bridges in the fire pot section extending between its inner and outer walls and disposed adjacent to and directly below the circulation apertures therein, holes in the upper side of 2 5 the dome section directly above its circulation apertures and provided in their upper ends with conical seats, bolts applied at one end to the perforations in the said bridges and at the other end to the holes in the top of the 0 witnesses.
