Description

Doon-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Pinon `STE- vENsoN, of Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had tothe ac companying drawings.
adjacent portion of the door.
longitudinal section through the fastener,-
The object of my invention yis to provide a fastener which shall meet the requirements of such doors as are used u on refrigerating apartments and the like, W ere it is necesand adjacent portion of the door, taken on the line II, II, in Fig. I;
In the accompanyin drawings, 1, represents a hollow door of t e ordinary t e employed in such structures, having a fi ing of nonconducting material, and 2, re resents a aclnng strip of compressible an preferab y elastic material applied laround the margin ofthe door, so as to form a close joint with the surface ofthe doorway. The baseplate 3, of the fastener is secured to the door by means of screws and is provided with . guides 4, 4, for the sliding bolt. 5, formed of a wide and flat elastic strip of metal whose front/extremity 6, is curved inwardly. The bolt 5, is attached by a screw in 7, to one end of a link 8, the other endo said link be- A ing provided with a hole which engages with a stud 9, upon an ovfl plate 10. Said plate 10, has a second stud 11, diametrically-opposite to the stud 9, and the inner ends of said two studs are secured td'a second oval plate 12, which constitutes the head of a s indle 22, extending through the door. The p ate 10, has a squared projection 13, adapted tok receive a lever-handle 14, and the spindle 22, is provided with a similar squared end 15, upon the other side of the door adapted toeiigage the lever-handle 16.

estantes nec; s, iso?.
` L'Ihe bearings for` the spindlje'gare previded in the base plate 3, and the ate 24.,
,secured upon the' opposite side -of t e door.
Intermediate` between these bearing poi-nts vthe spindle 22.,l is'surrounded b r an elongated paclrin 25, of'such abserfent 4character as is ac apted to be i'naintainedl in a greased condition, felt being preferab'lyused for the purpose. This packingis maintained in position around the- `spindle by means of a thin sleeve 2.6, which Vis mountedin a proper recess formed in the wood work of the door between the plates 3, 'and' 24'. The purpose of this packing is to revent the ingress of moisture and its conge ationnpon the working parts in such a hard condition'-v s might impedethe free manipulgtion'of the olt'.
Rests 17, and 18, are secured lupon the opposite sides of the door in the prio er relationspending with the locking o the bolt. The Y i doorwayvis provided with a hasplg, having. a freely' mounted roller 23, arranged in such relation to the plane of movement of the bolt, that the inwardly curved front end 6, thereof, when projected, shall pass inside be sprung inwar s, or towards the door-way, thus tendingto press the door tightly in its closed position. Rotation of either the handle 14, or the handle 1.6, to the right in vFig. I, will actuate the link 8, and withdraw the boltfrom contact with the hasp roller, the movement in this direction beirrf1r limited by contact between the stud] 1, an the under side of the'link 8, at 'which pointfurther rotat-ion of the oval plates 10, and 12, wili be arrested. In this position, the handles will have been thrown some distance past the vertical, and hence the devicewill rest in the its engagement therewith,
open v position until intentionally shifted,
Obviously, when the bolt has been shot for closingthe door, the two handles will be supported in the rests 17, and 18, and; hence be safe against an@v other than intentional" displacement.
Ho es 20,.and`21, may be formed in the respective handles and rests,
. so as to permit them vto be secured by means i of a pad-lock.
Having thus clair described niy` invention, I4
1. The combination cfa bolt insa direction transversely' of its length, means fon\shifting 7.1i to receiye lthe handles 14, an 16', when r turned into the extreme ostion, corre- Ytransversely of its length; a link; a rotatable l plate having studs, one of which is connected With said link and the other of which is adapted to engage with the surface of said link in one extreme positifn; a spindle for actuating said plate; a handle for said s indle; and a hasp having a roller adapte( to engage the front end of said bolt.
3. In a securing device for doors of re- I l l frifrerafnfr apartments, the combination,l
with a door; of. a sliding bolt mounted upon the inner face of said door; an actuating spindle for said bolt, which spindle passes entirely through the door; an elongated greased packing of absorbent material surrounding said spindle; and a sleeve surrounding said packing.
ln witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, at Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, this eleventh day of April, 1905.
