Letters Patent No. 87,232, dated February 23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN S'IRAVV-C'U'TTIIRS.
The .Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pari: of the same.
To all whom it ma/ a/ concern Be it known that I, J. J. ANDREW, of Saltilloville, in the county of Washington, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Straw-Cutter; and do hereby declare that thefollowing will'now proceed to describe its vconstruction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is an end view, and

'A represents the usual box of a straw-cutter, the throat of which rests in or on a frame, B.
In the throat of the box A is a steel bar, C, placed tlush withhthe edges of the box, so that the knife will work close against the same.
Above, thejthroat of the box, and in the frame B, is a cross-bar,-"=D, which extends beyondthe frame on one side; and to this end a lever, E, is pivoted.
To the inner side of the lever E, across the throat of the box, is secured the knife F.
This knife is somewhat angular-shaped, one side being nearly perpendicular from the lever, and the other side slanting from the lower point to the lever, the base of the knife, where secured to the lever, being about the saine width as the box.
.The slanting side .of the knife is sharpened, so as to cut the straw easily.
The perpendicular side of the knife is, of course, nearest to the handle of the lever.
Around the throat of tthe box A, on the frame B, is a metal guard or guide, H, between which and the frame the knife operates.
By this arrangement, a 'straw-cutter may be made considerably cheaper than any now in use, and is fully as strong and durable.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The angular-shaped knife F, constructed and operating substantiallyl as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2.' The combination of the box A, frame B, steel bar C, cross-bar D, lever E, and knife F, all constructed as described, and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
