4(1) WITNESSES.
WILLIAM G. PRICE, OF NEW CASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 26, 1907'.
Application led January 17, 1907. Serial No. 352.710.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM G. PRICE, a resident of New Castle, in the county ol Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usel'ul Improvement in Trucks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to trucks and more especially to motor trucks.
The objects of my invention are to provide for the strengthening and sti'll'ening of the frame of the truck so as to furnish a very rigid and durable construction which will withstand the severe strains and shocks to which said trucks are subjected.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set lerth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a plan view or' one-halt' oi' my improved truck, it not being deemed necessary to illustrate the other half which is an exact duplicate; Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section; Fig. 3 is a detail section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is a view ei the inner pedestal; Fig. 5 is a modi'lied form of gusset plate.
The numeral 2 designates the axles carrying the wheels 3, said axles being jeurnaled in suitable journal boxes f1 in the ordinary manner. The bolster 5 illustrated is of a commen type and as it forms no part of my present invention I will not describe the same in detail. This bolster is provided with ordinary center bearing plates 5zL and suitable springs 7 are employed.
The truck illustrated and to which my invention is applicable has certain features which form the subject matter for an application for Letters Patent of the United States iiled by me August 18, 1906, No. 331,139. Accordingly, said structure has the transoms 6 which may be formed of angle bars of suitable dimensions. The extreme ends of said transoms are bent to form the right angle portion 62L by means of which the transoms are secured by rivets S te the side frames 9. The bolster hanger brackets 10 have the inwardly bent portions 11 through which the rivets 12 pass which secure said brackets to the side frames 9. The opposite ends of the hanger brackets 10 are secured by the rivets 13 to the transoms 6.
The side frame stflener plate 14 is riveted to the side l'rame 9 by rivets S and 15, said stillener plate projecting above the side lrames 9 and also slightly below the same, and said stiil'ener plate being secured to the outer face of said side plate. The purpose of this still'ener plate is to resist bending and not compression oi' the side frame. Gusset plates 16 are secured by the rivets 17 to the transom 6 and said gusset plates have the ilanges 1S which are riveted by rivets 19 to the upper portion of the sti'll'ener plate 14. This provides a very strong and rigid connection between the t'ransoms and the side plates. By having the gusset plate secured te the sti'll'ener plate on the outside of the side l'rames the parts are so united as to lorm a very strong structure.
The side frames 0 are formed of a single piece of metal bent to the desired shape. Secured to the side frames are the pedestals 20 and 2l. The inner pedestal 20 may be formed oi a single piece of metal and is secured by the rivets 22 to the side frame. This pedestal 2O lits into the groove 23 liormed by the lugs 24 on the ournal boxes il. The outer pedestal 21 Iits in a like seat or groove 26 in that side olt the journal box a. The pedestals 20 and 21 are connected at the bottom by the bolt 27 with the spreader 28 interposed between said pedestals. By this construction I obviate the necessity of securing the journal box to the equalizing bar 20 as has ordinarily heretofore been the coiistruction adopted.
The pedestals 2() and 21 may be pressed to shape of metal of suitable thickness.
In llig. 5 I have shown a modilied form of gusset plate in which but a single piece of metal is employed instead of employing two separate gusset plates, as in the Iirst instance.
fhat I claim is:
l. In a truck, the combination of side trames, a bolster, transoms secured to said side frames, a sti'll'ener plate on the outside ol" said side lirame, and gusset plates connecting said transoms to said sti'llener plate.
2. In a truck, the combination of side frames, a bolster, transoms secured to said side iframes, a still'ener plate secured to the outer tace ol" said side frames, said stiilener plate projecting above said side frames, and gusset plates secured to said transoms and to the upper portion el: said sti'l'lener plate.
3. In a truck, the combination ol side frames, a bolster, transoins secured to said In testimony whereof, I the said WILLIAM side frames, a stitener plate secured to the G. PRICE, have hereunto set my hand.
outer faces of said side frames said stiifener plate extending above and below said side WILLIAM G' PRICE' frames,4 and gusset plates secured to said Witnesses:
transonis and to the upper portion of said ROBERT C. TOTTEN,
stifener plate. l RoBT. D. TOTTEN.
